XL: How to Make and Size Circles and Squares on a Worksheet

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, it is possible to create a circle by using the Ellipse tool on the Drawing toolbar. It is also possible to create a square by using the Rectangle tool on the Drawing toolbar.

To create a circle, use the following steps:

  1. If you do not have the Drawing toolbar displayed, click Toolbars on the View menu. In the list of toolbars, click Drawing, and then click OK.

  2. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Ellipse button.

  3. Press and hold down the SHIFT key. With the SHIFT key depressed, click the sheet (the place where you click will be where the upper-left portion of the circle will be positioned).

  4. Drag the crossbar down and to the right to draw the circle.

The circle on your worksheet should now be selected.

To resize the circle, do the following:

  1. If the circle is not selected, click the circle to select it.

  2. Position the insertion point over one of the circle's handles such that the crossbar changes to a double-headed arrow.

  3. Press and hold down the SHIFT key and drag the double-headed arrow until the circle is the desired size.

Squares can be created and resized using the same steps above; simply substitute the Rectangle tool for the Ellipse tool.
