WD97: Footnote Reference Mark Converted to Arabic Number

SYMPTOMS
In Word 6.x or 7.x, when you open a Word 97 document that contains auto-numbered footnote reference marks that are formatted as special characters
using Word 97, the special characters may change to Arabic numbers.
This occurs specifically when the auto-numbered reference is an asterisk,
a cross, a double cross, or a section break symbol.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you use the Word Import Converter (Mswrd832.cnv)
to open the document.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of the Word 97-2000
Import Converter. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with certain versions of the
Word 97 Import Converter.
This problem was corrected in Word 2000.
