Article ID: 143300

APPLIES TO

- Microsoft Word 6.01 for Macintosh
- Microsoft Word 6.01 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q143300
SYMPTOMS
When you click File on the Insert menu and then select a document on the
hard disk, the following error message appears:
The file could not be found.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the hard disk name begins with a space, or when
the file name ends with a space.
RESOLUTION
Hard Disk Name Starts with a Space
If the hard disk name starts with a space, rename the hard disk. (Hard
disk names don't usually begin with a space; if the hard disk is named
this way, the space was probably added by accident.)
After you remove the space from the hard disk name, if any programs don't
run, you must reinstall them. These programs may have been installed after
the hard disk's name acquired the space at the beginning, and the
registration database contains incorrect information about them.
If you completely rename the hard disk, you may need to rebuild the desktop
in addition to removing and then reinstalling programs.
File Name Ends with a Space
If the file name ends with a space, rename the file.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the
beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will
post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.
