FP1: "Could Not Get socket" Error Starting FrontPage

SYMPTOMS

When you start the FrontPage Personal Web Server, you get the following error message:

   Could not get socket.

CAUSE

The FrontPage Personal Web Server cannot identify a valid TCP/IP stack. The socket is a combination of an IP address and a port that identifies your TCP/IP address. This error occurs when the TCP/IP stack is not installed. Port numbers are a function of the TCP protocol and are used to identify the different services available on a computer.

RESOLUTION

Install Microsoft's TCP/IP for Windows 95 or Windows for Workgroups. If you are using Windows 3.1, install Trumpet Winsock. Trumpet Winsock is available as shareware on the Internet.

NOTE: Do not overwrite your original Winsock.dll file. If this file is located in the Windows or Windows\System folder (subdirectory), move or copy it to another folder (directory) before you install the TCP/IP stack. If this file is in the folder for your online service, you can leave it there.

If you run the FrontPage TCP_IP Test, the results indicate that the 32- Bit and 16-bit Winsocks are OK, but all other tests fail. This indicates that you have an online service or Internet connection which uses Winsock.dll to make a dial-up connection to the Internet. Winsock.dll is not a TCP/IP stack; it provides a transport independent interface for applications.

Sometimes when you run the TCP_IP Test, your modem automatically dials into your Internet service. In this case, you will have access to TCP/IP and the TCP/IP tests pass. But, if you disconnect from the service, the tests for IP Address, Host Name, Localhost, and 127.0.0.1 will fail.
