    Article ID: Q147371
    Creation Date: 22-FEB-1996

The information in this article applies to:

    • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 4.0

    SUMMARY

This article lists the components involved to set up a Message Handling Service (MHS) Gateway from Microsoft Exchange version 4.0 to Lotus cc:Mail version 5.1. This can be used for coexistence of the two products during migration of cc:Mail clients to Microsoft Exchange.

    MORE INFORMATION

    Products required:

    • cc:Mail PostOffice version 5.1 with cc:Mail Admin & cc:Mail Client
    • cc:Mail Link to MHS version 2.0
    • Novell MHS Connectivity Manager version 1.5
    • Microsoft Mail Gateway to MHS version 3.0
    • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 4.0

Direction - Going From cc:Mail to Microsoft Exchange
    1. Connect the cc:Mail PostOffice to the Novell MHS using the cc:Mail Link to MHS. This will translate mail messages from the cc:Mail Database format to SMF70 or SMF71 (Simple Message Format). MHSLINK is a DOS-based program that is one of the principal components of the Link to MHS gateway software, and it is responsible for intercepting cc:Mail and MHS messages.

The Link to MHS gateway polls the cc:Mail database for outgoing messages, translates them into the SMF-70 or SMF-71 format, and then deposits these messages into the MHS directory structure. Likewise, it also polls for incoming MHS messages, translates them into cc:Mail messages, and then deposits these messages into the cc:Mail database.

    2. Use Novell MHS Connectivity Manager to link Novell's MHS Database to the Shadow Postoffice on Microsoft Exchange server. The shadow postoffice needs to have the "MS Mail Gateway to MHS" Gateway component installed on it. The message gets translated from SMF70 format to a MAI file. Connectivity Manager spawns INPOST.EXE, which in turn spawns "collector" to extract mail from MS Mail Shadow postoffice. The INPOST.EXE then converts the messages that are in MS Mail format to SMF. Then, the program stores the mssages in the OUT directory message store for the other gateway or host(i.e. cc:Mail). It spawns OUTPOST.EXE to extract mail from the MSMAIL/OUT directory and put it into the Microsoft Mail shadow postoffice database (Inqueue.mbg).
    3. Run the MS Exchange Interchange service to translate and move messages from the shadow postoffice to the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.
