General Protection Fault Starting Works

SYMPTOMS

If Works 3.0, and another application are in the Startup group in Windows 95, you may receive the following error message when starting Windows:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
Clicking the Details button reveals the following additional information:
Msworks caused a general protection fault in module Msworks.exe at XXXX:XXXX (where XXXX:XXXX is the address where the fault occurred.)

RESOLUTION

Change the Works 3.0 shortcut's properties to run Minimized, to solve this problem.

To change the shortcut's properties, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Taskbar.
  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab of the dialog box, click Advanced.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Programs.
  4. Click the Startup folder.
  5. Use the right mouse button to click the Works 3.0 shortcut and click Properties on the menu that appears.
  6. Click the Shortcut tab.
  7. Change the Run Setting to Minimized and click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Close.
  9. Click OK on the Taskbar Properties box.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works for Windows version 3.0. This problem was corrected in Works versions 4.0 and later.
