The information in this article applies to:

  • The Microsoft Network version 1.2

SYMPTOMS

After you install version 1.2 of MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive the following message when you select the Internet and MSN service type:

This computer is not set up for dial-up networking. Would you like
   to do this now?

If you click Yes and then restart your computer, you still cannot connect to MSN. When you verify the access numbers, you receive the same message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have LANtastic or Banyan VINES networking components installed on your computer. These components can prevent the Dial-Up Adapter and the TCP/IP protocol from being installed.

RESOLUTION

Remove and reinstall Dial Up Networking by following these steps:

  1. Rename both of the Microsoft Network connectoids listed in the Dial Up Networking window.

  2. Click the Start button, click Find and then Files or Folders.

  3. In the named box type: "PPPMAC.VXD" (without the quotation marks)

  4. Rename the file to "Old PPPMAC.VXD." (never rename the extension.)

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to rename the files , SPLITTER.VXD, WSOCK.VXD, and INSOCK.DLL.

  6. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  7. Double click Add/Remove Programs.

  8. Select the Windows Setup tab.

  9. Double click Communications.

10.Remove the check from Dial Up Networking.

If LANtastic or Banyan VINES are installed, refer to LAN administrator to remove.

Restart the computer.

Add Dial Up Adapter and TCP/IP to the network configuration by following these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double click on Network.

  3. Click on the Add button, then double click Adapter.

  4. Click on Microsoft in the Manufacturers list, then click on Dial Up Apapter in the Network Adapter list.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Double click on Protocol.

  7. Click on Microsoft in the Manufacturers list, then click on TCP/IP in the Network Protocols list.

  8. Click OK.

  9. Restart the computer.

10.Add LANtastic or Banyan Vines to the network configuration.

If using Banyan VINES, make sure you are using the most recent drivers. Earlier drivers for Banyan VINES are not compatible with other protocols.
