SYMPTOMS
========
If you try to import a TIFF file from one of the ChurchArt clip art
collections published by Communications Resources into Publisher, you
may receive an error similar to the following:
Publisher cannot convert this picture.
This is either because Publisher doesn't recognize the format of
the picture you want to add or there was an error loading a
graphic converter. Publisher has graphic converters that enable it
to recognize most picture formats. Some of these converters may
be missing. To install converters for word processors and graphics,
run Publisher Setup again.
You may receive similar errors inserting the same TIFF image into any
of the other programs listed at the beginning of this article.
The same image will be imported correctly into Publisher for Windows,
versions 2.0 and 2.0a.
CAUSE
=====
Many of the TIFF images published in the ChurchArt clip art collections
have invalid information in their file headers. These graphics do not
follow the published TIFF specification.
The 16-bit TIFF filter used by Publisher 2.0 and the 16-bit versions of the
Microsoft Office programs assumes certain default information about every
TIFF image; the filter does not look in an individual image's header to
verify the information. The 32-bit TIFF filter, on the other hand, tries to
read the information from an image's header. If the image header contains
incorrect or invalid information, the filter will reject the image.
RESOLUTION
==========
Method 1: Repair the TIFF file header.
a. Open the TIFF image in a photo-editing program such as
Adobe PhotoShop, Corel Photo-Paint, Micrographx Picture
Publisher, or Microsoft Imager for Windows, version 1.0.
Some of these products may give you an error message
when you try to open the image, but they will be able to
open it anyway.
b. Save the file. If you are opening the file from CD-ROM,
you will have to save it with a new file name.
The image should now be imported correctly into Publisher for
Windows 95 and the Office for Windows 95 programs.
Method 2: Open the file in a 16-bit program, copy it, and paste it into
Publisher for Windows 95.
a. Install Publisher 2.0 or Word 6.0 into its own directory
on your computer.
b. Import the document into one of these programs.
c. Select the picture and click Copy on the Edit menu.
d. Start Publisher for Windows 95.
e. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
