The information in this article applies to:
- The Microsoft Network versions 1.2, 1.3, 2.0
SYMPTOMS
When you double-click the MSN icon on the desktop to start MSN, The
Microsoft Network, nothing may happen.
CAUSE
This symptom can occur after you upgrade to a new version of MSN, or if
you remove MSN before you remove the Internet Jump Start Kit.
An incomplete installation of the MSN 2.0 upgrade can also cause this issue
to occur.
RESOLUTION
MSN 1.0
To create a new shortcut icon for MSN, follow these steps:
- Right-click the CCDialer.exe file in The Microsoft Network folder,
and then click Create Shortcut.
- Drag the new CCDialer shortcut to the desktop.
- Right-click the CCDialer shortcut, and then click Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, type "CCDialer /H" (without quotation marks) in
the Target box, and then click OK.
- Rename the CCDialer shortcut to The Microsoft Network.
Note that although you can use the new shortcut icon to start MSN, MSN
properties such as Connection Settings are not available from the icon's
context menu.
MSN 2.0
Follow the steps below and try each solution before proceeding to the
next step or set of steps:
- Restart the computer.
- Verify that the largest executable program size is 570KB or larger.
a. Click Start, point to Programs and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
b. Type MEM at the MS-DOS prompt.
If the largest executable program size is less than 570KB, contact
Windows 95 support or your computer's manufacturer for help creating
more conventional memory.
Verify the proper installation of MSN. If the installation stopped prior
to the Restart/Download portion of the install, the icon will not respond
because it is being accessed before the installation has been completed.
Setup must be properly completed. This can be done one of three ways:
- Run Msnsetup.exe from the MSN 2.0 CD-ROM. Allow the setup program to
install the files and continue with the Restart/Download portion of the
installation.
-or-
- Run Msn13.exe and then run Msie301.exe from the Msnsetup\Compnts folder
on the MSN 2.0 CD-ROM, restarting at the end of each installation. Then
run Msnsetup.exe from the CD-ROM. Allow the setup program to install the
files and make sure to continue with the Restart/Download portion of the
installation.
- Copy all files from the MSN 2.0 CD-ROM to a temporary folder on the hard
drive and run Msnsetup.exe from there. This requires 431 MB of available
hard drive space.
