Cannot Print After Restarting Windows 95

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

After you install a printer, you may be able to print to the new printer correctly until you restart Windows 95.

CAUSE

This problem can be caused by older versions of Netscape Navigator, which install a driver in the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file. This driver causes a problem that does not allow Windows 95 to print properly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, disable the Netscape driver in the System.ini file. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type "system.ini" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.

  3. Locate the line that reads:

          device=vecpd.386

  4. Disable the line by placing a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line. The line should then read:

          ;device=vecpd.386

  5. On the File menu, click Save.

  6. Quit Notepad, and then restart your computer.

NOTE: You should also contact Netscape to inquire about obtaining a newer version of Netscape Navigator that does not cause this problem.
