SUMMARY

One way to troubleshoot printing problems is to disable extensions. On a computer that is not running Open Transport, you can disable extensions by starting your computer with the SHIFT key held down. When you disable extensions this way, it is still possible to print to a local printer or to a network printer. However, this SHIFT-restart method does not work if are using Open Transport.

This article describes a procedure for disabling all extensions except those required by Open Transport (so that you can disable extensions but still be able to print to a network printer).

In addition to these extensions, you will have to load the extensions required by the particular Office program from which you are trying to print. The following tables list the minimum number of extensions required to start the different Office programs.

Note, some third-party programs (Now Utilities and Conflict Catcher) that enable/disable extensions and control panels may expose some or all of the extensions necessary to start Microsoft Office programs and to print once they get started. The Extensions Manager that ships with your Apple system software does not expose any of the these extensions; so, you should be able to set extensions to "all off" and still be able to print to a network printer using Open Transport.
