PRJ: Width and Height of Drawing Objects

In Microsoft Project, you can specify the size and position of drawing objects drawn in the Gantt Chart view. The Width and Height options in the Size And Position tab of the Format Drawing dialog box describe the width and height of the rectangle that "precisely contains" the drawing object. For arches, ellipses, and polygons, you can see the containing rectangle's sides by selecting the drawing object and inspecting the drawing object's resizing handles.

For lines and arrows, you can see the containing rectangle's diagonal corners as the end points of the line or arrow. The width and height for lines and arrows describe a "vector." For example, a line with a width of 2 inches and a height of 3 inches means that from the start point you would go 2 inches horizontally and 3 inches vertically for the end point and connect the points for the line. You could see this by creating a rectangle over to the end points of the line and by then comparing the width and height of the line with the rectangle. The rectangle should have approximately the same width and height as the line.

Width and height can be 0 (zero) only for lines or arrows. This allows you to have vertical or horizontal lines.

To draw a vertical or horizontal line

1. On the View menu, click Gantt Chart.
2. If the Drawing toolbar is not displayed, click the Drawing button on the Standard toolbar.
3. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Line (or Arrow) button. The pointer changes to a cross hair.
4. Move the pointer to the Gantt bar chart, click and drag to draw a straight line.
5. On the Format menu, point to Drawing, and then click Properties to display the Format Drawing dialog box.
6. To make the line (or arrow) vertical, click the Size And Position tab and set the Width to 0 (zero).
7. To make the line (or arrow) horizontal, click the Size And Position tab and set the Height value to 0.

If the Width and Height are both set to 0, the line (or arrow) will disappear.
