The information in this article applies to:

  • The Microsoft Network versions 1.2, 1.3, 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive the following error message:

   - Guide.exe caused an invalid page fault on Kernel32.dll.

After you receive this message, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your password list file is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, recreate your password list file. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type "*.pwl" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.

  3. In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Rename. Rename the files to 1*.pwl, 2*.pwl, etc.

  4. After you rename all of the files in the list, click OK or Close until you return to Windows.

  5. Restart the computer. The password list file is recreated automatically when you sign in to Windows 95.

NOTE: If you have installed Microsoft Windows 95 Service Pack 1, password list files may be damaged even after you rename them and they are recreated automatically. To resolve this issue, obtain the Mspwlupd2.exe update file and run it. You can obtain this update file from the following page on the Microsoft site on the World Wide Web:

   http://www.microsoft.com/windows/software/passwd.htm

MORE INFORMATION

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, extract the Guide.exe and Guidenav.nav files from your original Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder. Both files are located in the Win95_07.cab cabinet file.

For information about using the Extract tool, type "extract" (without quotation marks) at a command prompt, or see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
