Assigning Password for Screen Saver May Cause Computer to Hang

SYMPTOMS

After you assign a password to a screen saver in Windows 95, you may receive the following error message and then your computer may stop responding (hang):

   Mprexe has caused an illegal operation and will be shut down.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you assign a password with more than 19 characters to a Windows 95 screen saver.

RESOLUTION

To close the screen saver, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click Display Properties in the Close Program dialog box, and then click End Task. With some screen savers (such as Flying Windows) you may have to restart your computer.

To prevent the problem from occurring, do not use a password with more than 19 characters for a screen saver.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
