Mac Bookshelf 96-97: Bookshelf Guide Quits on a PowerBook

SYMPTOMS
If the screen dims when you are in the Bookshelf Guide, Bookshelf stops
responding (hangs) or unexpectedly quits.
This occurs if you are using a PowerBook 520 or 540 running System 7.1.1.
CAUSE
Bookshelf Guide requires Apple Guide to function. Apple Guide has a known
problem running on System 7.1.1 on the PowerBook 520 and 540 models. This
problem causes Bookshelf Guide quit or hang if the screen dims. This
problem does not occur if you put the PowerBook to sleep.
RESOLUTION
To prevent this problem from occurring, do one of the following.
- Upgrade your system software to System 7.5 or higher.
-or-
- Prevent the screen from dimming.
To prevent the screen from dimming, so the following:
- On the Apple menu, click Control Panels.
- Open the PowerBook control panel.
- Choose Custom in the PowerBook control panel.
- On the Screen Dims slider, select Never.
-or-
- Instead of letting the screen dim, put the screen to sleep.
To put the screen to sleep do the following:
- on the Special menu, click Sleep.
