SUMMARY

This article describes the steps to install and run the Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh 15-digit patch when you are working in a network environment. Because there are two different types of administrative installations on the Macintosh, you will need to follow two different processes for each of these two types.

MORE INFORMATION

The steps to install and run the 15-digit patch vary according to the type of administrative installation you have on your server. A Mode 1 administrative installation is when you allow users to set up Microsoft Excel (or Microsoft Office) from a network server and all files are copied down to the workstation's hard drive. A Mode 2 administrative installation is when you set up Microsoft Excel (or Microsoft Office) from a network server, but only a handful of files are copied locally, and the user must retain network connectivity with the server in order to run Microsoft Excel.

The following sections assume you have the 15-digit patch on floppy disks.

Mode 1 (Install from the server)

  1. Create a single new folder on your server (the name does not matter).

  2. Copy each of the .sea files from each of the 15-digit patch floppy disks into this folder. Do not copy the folders on each of these floppy disks into this network folder.

Note that because there are three different 15-digit patches, you will have to repeat steps 1 and 2 for each of the different disk sets you have.

Also, if you have either the 68K or Power Macintosh 15-digit patch, there will be a total of three .sea files, and if you have the FAT 15- digit patch, there will be a total of five .sea files.

  3. Go to each workstation that is running a local copy of Microsoft Excel and run the patch from the appropriate server folder that you created in step 1.

Mode 2 (Run from the server)

  1. Connect to the server on which you have the Microsoft Excel (or Microsoft Office) folder.

  2. Make sure no one is running Microsoft Excel from this network server and that you have the proper rights to modify files on this server.

  3. Insert Disk 1 of the 15-digit patch floppy disks.

  4. Based on your network installation of Microsoft Excel, double-click the appropriate setup file listed in the table below:

       Microsoft Excel 15-Digit Patch
       Installation Disk 1 Setup file
       -----------------------------------------------------------

       Power Macintosh ExcelPower.sea
       68K Macintosh Excel68k.sea
       FAT ExcelFAT.sea

  5. Click Continue in the first window that appears.

  6. In the next window, choose the server and folder in which to install the patch.

Note that this folder should be the folder in which the current network installation of Microsoft Excel resides.

Also, make sure that in this window, you use "Microsoft Excel" in the "Unstuff as:" edit box. This will overwrite the existing version of Microsoft Excel, and you will not have to worry about having multiple instances of the same program on your computer.

  7. Click Save.

  8. When prompted as to whether or not you want to replace the existing version of Microsoft Excel, click Replace.

The install program will then unstuff all the necessary files from the disks, and you will prompted to insert Disk 2, Disk 3 (also Disks 4 and 5 if you are doing a FAT install), and then Disk 1 again.

  9. Once the installation is successful, click Quit.

Users will not have to rerun the setup for Microsoft Excel (or Microsoft Office) in order for the patch to take effect. The next time they start Microsoft Excel, they will be running the patched version of the program.
