                          DRIVE CONTROL

Perform one of four drive control options - reset drive,
set drive to OPR control, set drive to AVR control or
DOWN a drive. Enter the drive index and select on the
desired option. An explanation of the options follows:

        Reset drive

Resetting a drive does NOT perform any SCSI-bus or SCSI
        device resets.

Resetting performs one of the following, depending on the
        state of the specified drive.
        - If the drive is DOWN, this option causes a physical
unload of the drive to be attempted. This occurs for
standalone drives as well as drives in a robotic device.
        - If the drive is UP and not assigned to a user or application,
a physical unload of the drive will be attempted if it is
detected to be ready. If it is not ready, no action occurs.
        - If the drive is UP and assigned to a user or application,
this option will remove the tape file (i.e. perform an
implicit tpunmount(1)). This should only be done in
certain situations, such as a user leaving a tape assigned
and tying up a drive. DO NOT RESET AN ASSIGNED DRIVE UNLESS
INDICATED BY SITE POLICY OR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.

        UP (OPR control)

Sets the drive in a state that automatic volume assignment WILL NOT
take place. A drive that is OPR controlled must always be manually
assigned via Assign Drive. Note - for robotic drives, OPR control
and AVR control are the same - the drive is always automatically
        assigned.

        UP (AVR control)

Sets the drive in a state that automatic volume assignment of
labeled tapes WILL take place. This is the normal mode of
operation unless, for reasons of security, all assignments
        should be manually performed.

        DOWN drive

Take a drive out of the Media Manager device daemon's control.
When a drive is DOWN, it can be accessed via the physical drive
        name i.e. /dev/st5 or /dev/rmt/4cbn, without requiring
operator action for assignment. If a drive is not functional
and requires maintenance, it should be placed in the DOWN state
to keep users or applications from attemtping to use it.
To place a DOWN drive back under daemon control, perform the
UP (OPR or AVR control) option.

An error message is displayed if the drive is non-existent
or is not at this operator's location.
