                    VMADM CONFIGURE BARCODE RULES MENU

The "Configure Barcode Rules" submenu screen for the media management
utility is used for performing administrative functions on barcode rules.

Barcode Rules serve as a method to differentiate new media added through the
auto-populate, or "Inventory and Update" process. Any media added to a robot
matching a defined barcode tag will get assigned a media type, pool name,
maximum number of mounts (or cleaning count), and description. Barcode rules
allow you to logically modify the volume configuration in one step, after
physically adding media of different types to a robot.

For example, you can configure barcode rules for the initial population of
media that have barcodes in the format 'CLNxxxxx' for cleaning tapes and the
format 'DLxxxxxx' for data tapes:

barcode media volume max mounts/
tag type pool cleanings description
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CLN DLT_CLN None 40 cleaning media
DL DEFAULT NetBackup 0 DLT media

Then, after the media is physically added to the robot, select the special
action "Inventory a Robot and Update Volume Configuration". The new media
(and their media types) will be appropriately added to the volume configuration.

The <NONE> barcode tag allows assignment of specific media type, volume pool,
maximum allowed mounts (or number of cleanings), and description to media with
missing or unreadable barcodes.

The <DEFAULT> barcode tag allows assignment for media with barcodes that do
NOT match the other barcode tags in the barcode rule list.

The following is a brief description of the options available:

    Display Mode
Information about the barcode rules can be displayed in either BRIEF
or FULL format. By default, the display mode is BRIEF. In BRIEF mode,
all fields except rule number are displayed on one 80-character line.
In FULL mode, information from the barcode rule also includes the rule
number. For this mode, each field of the barcode rule is displayed on
a separate line. Under both modes, barcode rules are sorted by length
of the barcode tag, except for the special tags <NONE> and <DEFAULT>
which appear at the end of the list.

    Output Destination
The output destination can either be the screen or a file. If output is
being sent to the screen, the "more" utility is used to page through the
output. If the output destination is a file, you may either enter the
name of a file or enter a carriage return to use the default
(/tmp/vmadm_rule_output). Use the Output Destination menu option to
        toggle this behavior.

    Add Rule
Using this menu selection, you may define a new barcode rule to be used
when adding media to the volume configuration. The following is a brief
description of the information you will be asked for when adding barcode
        rules:

                Barcode Tag
-Enter the barcode tag (13 characters or less) for the rule
being added. For normal barcode tags, no special characters
are allowed. Exceptions are the special barcode tags
"<NONE>", which applies to media with missing or unreadable
barcodes, and "<DEFAULT>", which applies to barcoded media
that do not match any other barcode tags.

                Description
-Enter a description (25 characters or less) that will be
assigned to new media when this rule is used.

                Media Type
-Select the media type for which the rule applies. The
DEFAULT media type will allow rule (barcode tag) matches
for all types of new media. If multiple media types are
added to a robotic domain, this field is used to
differentiate the types for correct initialization of
                   volume database records.

                Maximum Allowed Mounts
-For media with data capacity, this determines the number of
times a volume can be mounted in write mode. There is no
limit to the number of times media can be mounted for read
                   operations.

                Number of Cleanings
-For cleaning media, this determines the number of times
that a particular cleaning volume may be used before it
is considered to be used up.

                Volume Pool
-Enter the volume pool which will be assigned to new media
matching this barcode rule. All cleaning media are
automatically assigned to the "None" pool.

    Change Rule
The information about a barcode rule can be changed using this option.
After selecting the barcode rule to change, you are prompted to change
the rule description, media type, maximum allowed mounts (or number of
cleanings), and the volume pool associated with the rule. The current
value for most rule information fields is displayed in the prompt, and
entering a carriage return will make use of the current value without
        change.

NOTE: This option can NOT be used to change the barcode tag of a
rule. To change the barcode tag, you must delete and re-add
               the barcode rule.

    Delete Rule
A barcode rule may be deleted by selecting this option, and choosing
the barcode tag for the rule to delete from the current list of barcode
        rules.

    List Rules
This option will display a list of the currently defined barcode
rules ordered by length of barcode tag, using the values of Display
Mode and Output Destination to determine the format and destination
of the rule listing. The special barcode tags always appear at the
        end of the list.
