                    VMADM INVENTORY AND UPDATE MENU

The "Inventory and Update" submenu screen for the media management
utility is used for performing an inventory of a robot, and updating the
volume configuration to match the robot's contents.

The database update is based on the use of a robot's inventory capability.
Robots with or without barcode capabilities and media with or without readable
barcodes are supported, though certain assumptions must be made for media
with missing or unreadable barcodes.

The inventory and update process handles the following situations:

     (1) existing media has been removed from the robot
     (2) existing media has been moved into the robot
     (3) existing media has been moved within the robot
     (4) new media has been added to the robot

These situations will lead to the following actions:

     (1) The media's residence will be updated to reflect the new non-robotic
location. The new volume group is the "OPTION FOR REMOVED MEDIA",
specified in the "Update Options" submenu as "Volume Group"

     (2) The media's residence will be updated to reflect the new robotic
location, including robot host, number, type, and slot location.
The new volume group is specified in "Input Volume Group". The
update process acts upon a single robot's volume configuration, so
volumes configured in different robots are ignored during the
          update process.

     (3) The media's residence will be updated to reflect the new robotic
location, including robot host, number, type, and slot location.
The new volume group is specified in the "Update Options" submenu,
under "OPTIONS FOR ADDED OR MOVED MEDIA". Additionally, the media is
assigned to the "Volume Pool" specified in the "Update Options" menu.
For robots that do not support barcodes and for media with missing or
unreadable barcodes, the media entry in the database is updated to
reflect the new non-robotic location, AND a new media entry is
created. Both actions (change to non-robotic and new media creation)
are necessary because without the barcode, there is no differentiation
between the replacement of media and moved media.

     (4) A new media entry is created. The new media ID is generated from the
last six characters of the barcode, if one exists. For robots that
do not support barcodes and for media with missing or unreadable
barcodes, the media ID may be generated from a seed, based on the
          "Media ID Prefix".

A description of the inventory and update options follows:

NOTE: For several of the media management operations, the administrator
can abort the operation by pressing the ESC key. To change which
robot is to be used for the update, quit the menu and reselect
"Inventory Robot and Update Volume Configuration".

Inventory Robot and Update Volume Configuration
-----------------------------------------------
This selection executes the inventory and update, using options as selected
on the "Update Options" submenu, through "Change Update Options". The update
operation will use default values for unspecified values, most of which are
set according to the type of robot that was selected. Output from the update
action will be displayed through the UNIX more(1) interface.

Change Mode
-----------
The update mode can be either interactive or non-interactive. The "Change
Mode" selection toggles the interactive setting between YES and NO. If set
to YES, a list of recommended changes will be displayed before any volume
  configuration changes are made.
