			VMADM SPECIAL ACTIONS MENU

The "Special Actions" submenu screen for the media management utility is used
for performing special administrative functions. The following is a brief
description of the options available:

    Change Description for Volume
The description of a volume can be changed using this option. After
selecting the media ID for which to change the description, the current
        volume description is displayed.  A new description can then be entered;
a maximum of 25 characters is allowed.

    Change Volume Pool for Volumes
This option allows the administrator to change the volume pool attribute
for one or more volumes. After selecting the new volume pool to use,
the administrator specifies the media ID's of all volumes for which the
volume pool is to be changed. A blank line terminates the entry of
volumes and initiates the changing of the volume pool for all volumes
entered. The current choices for volume pool are presented in a list to
select from. Changing the volume pool for an optical volume also
changes the volume pool for its partner volume. The volume pool cannot
be changed for a volume that is currently "assigned" to a user or
        application.

    Change Expiration Date for Volumes
This option can be used to set or change the expiration date for one or
more volumes. After entering the expiration date to use, the
administrator specifies the media ID's of all volumes for which the
expiration date is to be changed. A blank line terminates the entry of
volumes and initiates the changing of the expiration date for all
volumes entered. Entering an expiration date of 0 means that the
        volumes entered will never expire.

    Change Volume Group for Volumes
This option allows the administrator to change the volume group
attribute for one or more volumes. The administrator specifies the
media ID's of all volumes for which the volume group is to be changed.
As media are selected, they are validated to contain common media types
and residences. A blank line terminates the entry of volumes. After
volume entry, the administrator selects the new volume group from a list
of volume groups, or alternately specifies automatic generation of a new
volume group to be assigned to all selected media. Changing the volume
group for an optical volume also changes the volume group for its
        partner volume.

Set Maximum Allowed Mounts for Volumes
This option can be used to set or change the maximum allowed mounts for
one or more volumes. After entering the maximum mount count to use, the
administrator specifies the media ID's of all volumes for which the
maximum allowed mount count is to be changed. A blank line terminates
the entry of volumes and initiates the changing of the maximum mount
count for all volumes entered. Entering a maximum allowed mount count
of 0 means that the volumes entered can be mounted an infinite number of
        times.

Modify Number of Cleanings on Cleaning Cartridge
To set or modify the number of cleanings available on a cleaning tape,
select this option. After selecting the media ID for which to modify
the cleaning count, the current cleaning count is displayed. A new
cleaning count can then be entered.

    Initiate Media Manager Volume Daemon
This option is provided as a means to manually initiate the Media
Manager volume daemon (/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmd). Normally, this option
need not be used directly, as vmd is started by the device daemon, ltid.

    Terminate Media Manager Volume Daemon
This option is provided as a means to manually terminate the Media
Manager volume daemon (/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmd). Normally, this option
        need not be used.

    Update/Validate Barcode for Volumes
This option can be used to verify and update the barcode field for TS8,
TC8, TL8, TC4, and TLD volumes in the volume configuration. The inventory
capability of the robot software will be used to read the barcode for
single or multiple volumes. This action will cause the volume
configuration to be updated for this volume by utilizing what the
robot actually scans for the volume barcode.

The Tape Stacker 8mm daemon, ts8d(1M), must be active on the robot
control host for this option to be effective with a TS8 robot.

The Tape Carousel 8mm daemon, tc8d(1M), must be active on the robot
control host for this option to be effective with a TC8 robot.

The Tape Library 8mm Control daemon, tl8cd(1M), must be active on the
robot control host for this option to be effective with a TL8 robot.

The Tape Carousel 4mm daemon, tc4d(1M), must be active on the robot
control host for this option to be effective with a TC4 robot.

The Tape Library DLT Control daemon, tldcd(1M), must be active on the
robot control host for this option to be effective with a TLD robot.

Inventory a Robot and Report Contents
The contents of inventory-capable robots can be reported using this
option. The "inventory" capability of the robot will be used to
generate a list of what the robot scans for volumes and barcodes.
This option may prove useful if you would like to obtain information
regarding the physical tape placement (in the robot).

For the robot inventory, you will be prompted for a robot to use.
If inventory-capable robots are already defined in the volume
configuration, a list of these robots will be presented. If none
are defined or if none are selected, you will be prompted for a robot
control host to be searched for configured robots. If any robots are
present in the device configuration for the specified host, a list will
be presented, allowing you to select the robot.

The appropriate control daemon must be active on the robot control host
for this option to be effective.

Inventory a Robot and Compare with Volume Configuration
The contents of inventory-capable robots can be checked and verified
using this option. The "inventory" capability of the robot will be
used to generate a list of what the robot scans for volumes and
barcodes. These results will be compared to what the volume
configuration indicates is in the robot. This option may prove useful
if you would like to obtain information regarding comparisons between
the physical tape placement (in the robot) versus the logical tape
placement (in the volume configuration) without actually updating the
        volume database.

For the verification of a robot's contents, you will be prompted for a
robot to use. If inventory-capable robots are already defined in the
volume configuration, a list of these robots will be presented. If none
are defined or if none are selected, you will be prompted for a robot
control host to be searched for configured robots. If any robots are
present in the device configuration for the specified host, a list will
be presented, allowing you to select the robot.

The appropriate control daemon must be active on the robot control host
for this option to be effective.

Inventory a Robot and Update Volume Configuration
This option displays a submenu from which an administrator can update
the volume database so that it matches the contents of a robot. The
"inventory" capability of the robot will be used to generate a list of
what the robot scans for volumes and barcodes. These results will be
compared to what the volume configuration indicates is in the robot.
The volume configuration may then updated so that it agrees with the
        robot inventory.

Before entering the "Inventory and Update" submenu, you will be prompted
for a robot to use. If inventory-capable robots are already defined in
the volume configuration, a list of these robots will be presented. If
none are defined or if none are selected, you will be prompted for a
robot control host to be searched for configured robots. If any robots
are present in the device configuration for the specified host, a list
will be presented, allowing you to select the robot.

The appropriate control daemon must be active on the robot control host
for this option to be effective.

     Configure Barcode Rules
This menu option is used to add, change, delete, and list barcode rules,
which can then used by the special action "Inventory a Robot and Update
Volume Configuration." Barcode rules serve as a method to differentiate
new media added through the auto-populate, or update process. Any media
added to a robot matching a defined barcode tag will get assigned a
media type, pool name, maximum number of mounts (or cleaning count),
        and description.

Use the Help option in this submenu for more information on these
        topics.
