                       VMADM UPDATE OPTIONS MENU

The "Update Options" submenu screen for the media management utility
is used for selecting options for an update of the volume configuration
to match a robot's contents.

A description of the update options follows:

NOTE: For several of the media management operations, the administrator
can abort the operation by pressing the ESC key. To change which
robot is to be reconciled, quit both the current menu and the previous
menu, and reselect "Inventory a Robot and Update Volume Configuration"
or "Add Volumes", depending on the route taken to the current menu.

OPTION FOR REMOVED MEDIA

Volume Group
------------
This selection brings up a list of volume groups that are valid for the media
type that was selected, in addition to entries for no volume group,
specification of a new volume group name, and auto-generation of a new volume
group name. This volume group is used for media moved out of a robot.
If the media type is DEFAULT, only new volume group names (or no volume group)
are allowed. If the volume group is DEFAULT, auto-generation will be used
to create the new volume group name.

OPTIONS FOR ADDED OR MOVED MEDIA

Input Volume Group
------------------
This selection brings up a list of volume groups that are valid for the media
type that was selected, in addition to entries for specification of a new
volume group name, and auto-generation of a new volume group name. This
volume group is used for new media and media moved within the robot. If the
media type is DEFAULT, the robot's type will be used for the media type when
searching for existing volume groups. If the volume group is DEFAULT, auto-
generation will be used to create the new volume group name.

Use Barcode Rules
-----------------
The update may use barcode rules or ignore them. The "Use Barcode Rules"
selection toggles between YES and NO. If set to YES, barcode rules previously
defined will be searched in the event media are added or moved. Barcode rules
serve as a method to differentiate new media added through the update process.
Any media added to a robot matching a defined barcode tag will get assigned a
media type, pool name, maximum number of mounts (or cleaning count), and
description. If set to NO, the barcode rules will be ignored. See the
special action "Configure Barcode Rules" menu for more information.

Media Type
----------
This selection brings up a list of media types that are valid for the robot.
If the media type is DEFAULT, an internal default will be used. In the case
of one robot handling multiple media types, the media type specified will
override media types contained in barcode rules.

Media Type Mappings
-------------------
These indicate the mapping between robotic vendor software media types and
Media Manager media types. Currently, this includes the Automated Cartridge
System (ACS) which is used for StorageTek libraries under ACS robotic
control, the IBM Automated Tape Library (ATL) library manager which is used
for control of the IBM Magstar 3494 library under TLH robotic control, and
the Distributed AML Server (DAS) which is used for EMASS Grau Automated
Media Libraries (AMLs) under TLM robotic control.

For ACS robots, the robotic inventory returns a list of media ID's and their
media types as known by ACS Library Software (ACSLS). These options allow
half-inch cartridge media types to be mapped to either of Media Manager's
half-inch media types (HCART or HCART2), DLT media types to be mapped to
Media Manager's DLT media types (DLT or DLT2), and the unknown media type to
be treated as any of the half-inch cartridge or DLT media types in Media
Manager. Selection of the "Change Media Type Mappings" option brings up a
menu displaying the current mappings. Selection of a specific ACS media type
causes rotation through the allowable Media Manager media types.

For TLM robots, the robotic inventory returns a list of media ID's and their
media types as known by DAS. These options allow half-inch cartridge media
types to be mapped to either of Media Manager's half-inch media types (HCART
or HCART2) and the unknown media type to be treated as any of half-inch, DLT,
or 8mm media types in Media Manager. Selection of the "Change Media Type
Mappings" option brings up a menu displaying the current mappings. Selection
of a specific TLM media type causes rotation through the allowable Media
  Manager media types.

For TLH robots, the robotic inventory returns a list of media ID's and their
media types as known by the IBM ATL library manager. These options allow
half-inch cartridge media types to be mapped to either of Media Manager's
half-inch media types (HCART or HCART2) and the unknown media type to be
treated as one of the half-inch media types in Media Manager. Selection of
the "Change Media Type Mappings" option brings up a menu displaying the
current mappings. Selection of a specific TLH media type causes rotation
through the allowable Media Manager media types.

Media ID Prefix
---------------
The update may require use of a prefix for generation of new media ID's, for
cases where the robot does not support barcodes, or for media with missing
or unreadable barcodes. This selection brings up a list of media ID prefixes
to choose from, in addition to entries for use of an internal default, use of
no prefix, and specification of a new media ID prefix to use. The list of
prefixes comes from "MEDIA_ID_PREFIX" entries in the Media Manager
configuration file, vm.conf, on the current host. If the Media ID Prefix is
NOT USED (meaning "Use No Media ID Prefix" was selected), the update may
fail, depending on specific situations including non-barcode-capable robots
and movements involving media with missing/unreadable barcodes. The "Use
Platter Side in Media ID" selection is not displayed when the Media ID Prefix
  is not used.

Use Platter Side in Media ID
----------------------------
Media ID's generated for optical media have associated media ID partners.
If "Use Platter Side in Media ID" is set to YES, media ID's will be generated
in the format "xxxxxA" and "xxxxxB", representing the two sides on an optical
platter, where "xxxxx" consists of the Media ID Prefix and auto-generated
numbers. If set to NO, the platter side will not be coded into the media ID.

Volume Pool
-----------
This selection brings up a list of Volume Pools to which any media added to or
moved within a robot will get assigned. If the Volume Pool is DEFAULT, media
will be added to the "NetBackup" Volume Pool. If a Volume Pool is specified,
it will override any Volume Pool information in the barcode rules.
