                              Barcode Rules

                          Barcode Rules Overview

Barcode Rules serve as a method to differentiate new media added through
the "Update Volume Configuration" operation from the "Robot Inventory"
dialog. Any new media added to a robot matching a defined barcode tag will
get assigned a media type, volume pool, maximum number of mounts (or
cleaning count), and description. Barcode rules allow you to logically
modify the volume configuration in one step, after physically adding media
of different types to a robot.

For example, you can configure barcode rules for the initial population
of media that have barcodes in the format 'CLNxxxxx' for cleaning tapes
and the format 'DLxxxxxx' for data tapes:

  Barcode Media Volume Max Mounts/
  Tag Type Pool Cleanings Description
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------
CLN DLT_CLN None 40 cleaning media
DL DEFAULT NetBackup 0 DLT media

Then, after the media is physically added to the robot, select the robot
action "Update Volume Configuration". The new media (and their media types)
will be appropriately added to the volume configuration.

The <NONE> barcode tag allows assignment of specific media type, volume
pool, maximum allowed mounts (or number of cleanings), and description
to media with missing or unreadable barcodes.

The <DEFAULT> barcode tag allows assignment for media with barcodes that
do NOT match the other barcode tags in the barcode rule list.

                         Barcode Rule Attributes

  Barcode Tag

Enter the barcode tag (13 characters or less) for the rule
being added. For normal barcode tags, no special characters
are allowed. Exceptions are the special barcode tags
"<NONE>", which applies to media with missing or unreadable
barcodes, and "<DEFAULT>", which applies to barcoded media
that do not match any other barcode tags.

  Media Type

Select the media type for which the rule applies. The
DEFAULT media type will allow rule (barcode tag) matches
for all types of new media. If multiple media types are
added to a robotic domain, this field is used to differentiate
the types for correct initialization of volume database
	records.

  Volume Pool

Select the volume pool which will be assigned to new media
matching this barcode rule. All cleaning media are
automatically assigned to the "None" pool. This value
will be ignored if the Volume Pool in the Update Options
is set to a non-default value.

  Maximum Allowed Mounts

For media with data capacity, this determines the number of
times a volume can be mounted in write mode. There is no
limit to the number of times media can be mounted for read
	operations.

  Number of Cleanings

For cleaning media, this determines the number of times
that a particular cleaning volume may be used before it
is considered to be used up.

  Description

Enter a description (25 characters or less) that will be
assigned to new media when this rule is used.

                         Adding a New Barcode Rule

  1.	Choose Barcode Rules from the Robots menu in the xvmadm main
	window.

  2.	Choose New from the Barcode Rules dialog. This opens the
	Creating Barcode Rule box.

  3.	Enter the barcode tag, media type, volume pool, max mounts
(or cleaning count), and description that will be assigned to
new media added when this barcode rule is used. The Barcode
Rule Attributes section above describes the fields in this
	dialog box.

  3.	When you have finished entering information for the new barcode
rule, click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.

                     Changing a Barcode Rule's Attributes

  1.	Select the desired rule from the Barcode Rule list that appears
after selecting Barcode Rules from the Robots menu on the xvmadm
	main window.

  2.	Choose Change from the Barcode Rules dialog. This opens the
Changing Barcode Rule dialog box, which shows the attributes
	for the selected barcode rule.

  3.	Change any of the information displayed for the selected barcode
	rule.

  4.	Select OK when you are finished.

                            Deleting a Barcode Rule

  1.	Choose Barcode Rules from the Robots menu in the xvmadm main window.

  2.	Select the desired barcode rule from the Barcode Rule list.

  3.	Choose Delete from the Barcode Rules dialog.

You are prompted for verification before the barcode rule is deleted.
