			Moving a Volume Group

Moving a Volume Group

In addition to being able to logically move individual volumes, you can
logically move an entire volume group. A volume group can be logically
moved between robotic and nonrobotic locations. You can move a volume
group from one robot to another by moving it to Not Robotic as an
intermediate step.

You define volume groups when adding volumes to the volume configuration.
A volume group is an administrator convenience for moving volumes.

Note: If a volume group is moved back into a robot for which slot numbers
are tracked, every volume must be physically returned to its original
slot. The move group operation leaves slot numbers unchanged in the
database. Volumes in a volume group that were added with a residence
outside of a library cannot be moved to a robot with the Move Volume
Group operation, since they have no slot information.

The procedure for moving a volume group is as follows:

1. From the Volumes list in the Media Management window, select the
volume groups want to move. The selected groups are highlighted.

2. Choose Move from the Actions menu.
This opens a move dialog box with the current attributes of the selected
volume group as default values. The dialog that opens depends on the
volumes you selected. The section Move Volume Group Dialog Description,
(below) explains how to complete the dialogs. Fields that have no meaning
for moving the media and robot you selected cannot be changed.

If you selected more than one volume group, a separate Move Volume
Group dialog appears for each of them. For example, if you selected one
group to move out of a robot and another group as a replacement, a dialog
opens for each group. You must complete both dialogs to execute the move
(moving the group out of the robot first).

3. Choose OK to complete the operation or Cancel to cancel it.
Moving volumes in xvmadm changes only their logical residence in the
database. They must also be moved physically.

		Move Volume Group Dialog Description

media type. For robotic volume groups, only the "Not
Robotic" robot type can be used as a destination.

Robot Host
Enter the name of the host that drives the robot you
	specified for Robot Type.

This is the host where you have defined or will
define the Robotic Device File for this robot.

If you selected a Robotic Type residence, enter a
new robot number or choose one that already exists
from the displayed list. Robot numbers must match
those you use when adding the robot.
