                                  Volume Pools

                               Volume Pool Overview

A volume pool identifies a logical set of volumes by usage. Associating
volumes with a volume pool protects them from access by unauthorized
users, groups, or applications. You can create volume pools for applications,
user groups, or other reasons and as you add volumes, associate them with
the appropriate pool. You can also move volumes to a different pool later.

You must create a volume pool before you can add volumes to it. You do not
have to create a pool for NetBackup. Media Manager automatically reserves
a pool named NetBackup that you can specify when adding NetBackup volumes.

During initial configuration, it is easiest to create all of your volume pools
before starting to add volumes to Media Manager. You can then simply add
volumes to volume pools as you create the volumes.

Do not confuse volume pools with volume groups.

o A volume pool identifies a set of volumes by usage.

o A volume group identifies a set of volumes by location and you
specify the group when you add the volume. Groups are convenient
when moving volumes (for example from robotic to nonrobotic).

Media in a volume pool can be in more than one location and therefore can
belong to more than one volume group.

                            Volume Pool Attributes

Pool Name

Enter the name for the new volume pool. The name must be 20
characters or less and contain no spaces or special characters.

Host Name

Enter the name of the server that is allowed to request and use volumes
	in this volume pool.

Entering a specific host name allows only that host to access the
	volume pool.

Using the default, ANYHOST, allows any host to access the volume pool.

For NetBackup, if you have a single server, then use the name of the
NetBackup server (not a client). If you have multiple NetBackup
servers (master and slaves), then always set this value to ANYHOST,
	which is the default.

User Name

Enter the login name of the user that is allowed to request and use
	volumes in the volume pool.

Entering a specific name allows only processes running as that user
	to access the volume pool.

Using the default, ANY, allows any user to access the pool.

For NetBackup or HSM, enter root for the User Name.

If you designate a specific user name and a different user requests
the pool, then Media Manager verifies the Group Name (see below).

Group Name

Enter the name of the user group that is allowed to request and use
	volumes in this volume pool.

Entering a specific name allows any processes running as that user
group to access the volume pool.

Using the default, NONE, allows only the user specified by User Name
to request or access the volume pool. All other users in any groups
	are denied access.

If the pool user name is ANY, or the pool user name matches the
requesting user, Media Manager allows access.

DO NOT confuse this group name, which refers to user, with the
	volume group.

Description

Enter a description (30 characters or less) of the volume pool you
	are adding.

                            Adding a New Volume Pool

1. Choose New and then Volume Pools from the Actions menu in the xvmadm
	main window.

This opens the Creating Pool dialog box.

2. Enter the name of the volume pool, its description, and who may access
volumes in the volume pool. The Volume Pool Attributes section above
describes the fields in this dialog box.

The Hostname, User Name, and Group Name refer to the application
that is making the tape request on the user's behalf (for example,
	NetBackup).

To interact directly with Media Manager (bypassing NetBackup), then set
these attributes to the appropriate values for the user that is making
	request.

3. When you have finished entering information for the new volume pool,
click on the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.

                     Changing A Volume Pool's Attributes

1. Select the desired pool from the Volume Pools list in the xvmadm main
	window.

2. Choose Change from the Actions menu. This opens the Changing Pool
dialog box, which shows the attributes for the selected volume pool.

3. Change any of the information displayed for the selected volume pool.

4. Select OK when you are finished.

                            Deleting a Volume Pool

1. Ensure that there are no volumes in the volume pool which you wish
to delete. If necessary, change the volume pool name for any volumes
in that pool. Or, if they are unneeded, delete them.

2. Select the desired pool from the Volume Pools list in the xvmadm main
	window.

3. Choose Delete from the Actions menu.

You are prompted for verification before the pool is deleted.
