QUALIFIED PLATFORMS
===================
You can use the rasagent package on the following platforms and
operating systems:

Sun Platforms : The Network Storage Agent will run on any SUN
                       Solaris server.

Sun StorEdge : The Network Storage Agent supports the Sun StorEdge T3
Product Support array, the Sun StorEdge A5x00 array,
the Sun StorEdge A3500-FC array, and Sun StorEdge
                       Network FC Switch-8 and Switch-16.

Operating Systems : Solaris 8.U4 or greater. The Network Storage Agent
2.1 will also run on older versions of Solaris
(Solaris 7, Solaris 2.6), but will not support the SAN
                       and Topology categories).
** See Features below for non-Solaris operating system
                          support.

Perl : 5.005 or better is mandatory. Use the following URL
to acquire the proper version if necessary.
                       http://www.perl.com/pub/language/info/software.html
                       or http://www.sunfreeware.com/

If the proper version DOES in fact already exist,
create a symbolic link of the executable to
                       /usr/bin/perl.

Netscape : All testing and development has been done using the
netscape browser. The versions have varied as updates
have come available. The current version being used
                       to test with is 4.76.

Browsers and/or versions other than stated above may
                       have unexpected results.

FEATURES
========
o Collects and reports information about Sun StorEdge A3500-FC arrays,
Sun StorEdge A5x00 arrays, Sun StorEdge T3 arrays, Sun StorEdge A1000
arrays and Sun StorEdge Network FC Switch-8 and Switch-16. Types of
information includes device configuration, device statistics, device state
and availability, device message-log information, and system configuration.

o Creates a model of the device and its components, storing state
information about that device and saving log information.

o If there are existing problems with a storage device when the Network
Storage Agent is installed, all attempts to interpret the condition will
be made and an event will be generated if deemed necessary.

o Incorporates the Sun StorEdge StorTools 3.3 functionality to do
Message Summary, Snapshot and Revision Checking. These utilities,
however, do not include Sun StorEdge SAN Release 3.0.

o For Sun StorEdge(TM) T3 and SUN StorEdge(TM) SAN Release 3.0
connected in a non-Solaris environment, the Network Storage Agent must be
installed on a Solaris server and configured to monitor the devices through
the management path. Sun StorEdge(TM) A5x00 and Sun StorEdge(TM) A1000 and
Sun StorEdge(TM) A3500-FC are not supported by the Network Storage Agent
  in a non-Solaris environment.

PRODUCT HINTS
=============
o You must be superuser to use this package.

o You should be familiar with UNIX commands and Sun's disk array
products before attempting to use this product.

o Use "/opt/SUNWrasag" as the package base directory.

o After the package is completely installed, execute the program
"/opt/SUNWrasag/bin/ras_install" to install the RASAgent service
and cron. There are also several links to additional directories
that are created during this execution.

o After installing the Network Storage Agent, set the environment
variables PATH and MANPATH to include the Network Storage Agent
  directories "/opt/SUNWrasag/bin" and "/opt/SUNWrasag/man".

o If Sun StorEdge StorTools 4.1 or better is installed, be sure to
use that package to execute the Snapshot functionality.

o An upgrade of the Network Storage Agent requires a new discovery of the
devices and you will have to re-enter the Master Configuration.
Copy the /opt/SUNWrasag/DATA/rasagent.conf file to /tmp for reference
to previous information after the new installation is completed.
DO NOT COPY THIS FILE BACK. USE ONLY AS REFERENCE.

o Use the Review Config function in the Maintenance section to ensure
the Network Storage Agent is ready to run.

o A previously installed instance of a "similar" version of the SUNWrasag
package MUST be removed prior to a new installation or upgrade. This will
NOT cause the loss of previous configuration information. A similar
version would be considered to have the same version number (e.g. 2.x)
  unless otherwise specified.

o To prevent problems with the inetd services starting, typically when NIS
or NIS+ is not being used, edit the nsswitch.conf in the /etc directory.
The entries for hosts and protocols must be reordered to be "files nis".
Also, the /etc/hosts file will require valid entries for each one of the
devices. In reference to Bug ID 4480155.

o A Country field has been added to the Host Configuration information for
version 2.1 of the Network Storage Agent. Consequently, an upgrade from
2.0 to 2.1 will cause the Master Configuration window to open
automatically each time the Admin GUI is entered from the browser.
This will continue until the field is filled in with a proper Country
name or abbreviation, such as UK, England, or USA.

o Converting a Slave agent to a Master using ras_install will allow the new
slave to maintain the configuration information from the original master.
If the other slave agents need to report to this new master, ras_install
must be executed on those other slaves with the new master's hostname or
  ip address.

o A Fiber Channel Switch (Sun_Switch) can be manually added to the monitored
configuration even if it does exist in the /etc/fcswitch.conf file. Be
aware, however, that the SAN topology may not display the device due to the
discovery managers dependence on the fcswitch.conf file.

It is recommended that an entry be made in the /etc/fcswitch.conf file
which matches the ip name in the /etc/hosts file to avoid doing the
automatic discovery. Ensure the check box labeled "Show OutOfBand devices
in topology:" in the Maintain Hosts section is checked if this switch is
being monitored by a host that does not have a data path connection.
These steps will ensure a properly displayed, understandable topology.

o If the Network Storage Agent RSS Provider is selected and the RSS software
is not installed and/or configured properly, the following message is to be
  expected.

***ERR: Cannot find Machine name in Permissions file

o There are instances when the topology and event messages concerning fibre
channel counters (ITW, CRC) or MPXIO, will not be exact. This is because
the SE Series storage solutions' Service Processor monitors its components
through an ethernet connection, not the fibre channel. Because of this, the
Network Storage Agent obtains partial information to generate an accurate
  topology and event.

To better understand these anomolies, multiple instances of the Network
Storage Agent need to be installed in a master/slave configuration.
Agent(s) installed on hosts with the InBand fibre channel connections
will be able to complete the topology.

o The SSRR service may fail displaying the topology over the PPP link.
The indication is a message stating "Bad Magic Number". Reference bug
  id 4527187 for additional information.

Follow these steps to correct to problem.

1.) Modify the /etc/inetd.conf file as per the following:
From: rashttp stream tcp nowait root /opt/SUNWrasag/bin/rashstart
        rashstart -d /opt/SUNWrasag

To: rashttp stream tcp nowait root /opt/SUNWrasag/bin/rashstart
        rashstart -X 300

  2.) Restart the inetd daemon.
    # kill -1 <PID>
