- [WINFX]AAAREADME.TXTH------------------------------------------------------------------------F Although considerable effort has been expended to make this softwareD correct and reliable, no warranty is implied; the author disclaimsD any obligation or liability for damages, including but not limitedE to special, indirect, or consequential damages arising out of or in: connection with the use or performance of this software.H------------------------------------------------------------------------@This is Windows File Exchange (WINFX), version 1.0. This programEcan be used to exchange files between VMS systems and various Windows?operating systems using the FAT file system. It supports floppyAdisks and hard disks, such as ZIP disks, connected either through?SCSI or IDE interfaces on Alpha systems, or SCSI on VAX systems?(good old-fashioned Sneaker Net). It also supports file systems2within container files resident on the VMS system.CSee the FREEWARE_README.TXT file for a functional summary of WINFX.CUse the built-in HELP within WINFX for more detailed information onDspecific commands and functions. No other documentation is available
at this time.DTo install WINFX, install or copy the contents of the main directoryCto a location suitable to your environment and policies. The source6directory ([WINFX.SRC]) is not required for operation.CTo make it available system-wide, place a call to WINFX_STARTUP.COMBin your system startup file. Also place the following line in yourSYLOGIN.COM file: $ @WINFX_ROOT:WINFX_SETUPAAlternatively, individual users interested in using WINFX can putthis in their LOGIN.COM file.@Please see comments in WINFX_STARTUP.COM and WINFX_SETUP.COM forDmore information on specific configurations and for enabling certainoptions.HTo build WINFX from source, set default to the SRC directory and executeBthe command file MAKE.COM. If you just want to re-link it, executeILINK.COM. WINFX was built using DEC C version 6.2 and version 6.0 on VAX.IIt also has a small amount of Macro-32 for building the shareable images.DIt should work on Itanium when that becomes available (obviously notsupported yet).AWINFX has been tested quite extensively with floppy disks and ZIPEdisks (FAT12 and FAT16), but has not been tested thoroughly with hardAdisks using FAT32. It has beed tested with VMS versions 6.2 (withCSCSI08 ECO), 7.1-2, 7.2-2, 7.3, and 7.3-1 on Alpha, and version 7.2Eon VAX. I have found that some older versions lack the necessary SCSIFsupport for certain disk types (specifically, IOMEGA ZIP disks). I useCan ACARD AEC-7720 SCSI-to-IDE adapter for hard disks, and the AlphaEand VAX firmware do not quite work right sometimes with this adapter.@On the Windows side, I have tested it only with Windows 98SE andFWindows 95 OSR2 (but floppy disks and ZIP disks appear to work alrightwith Windows NT 4.0 SP6).?Please direct suggestions for improvement or bug reports to the?author at the following e-mail address. Please be sure that the2word "WINFX" is in the subject line of the e-mail. SCamp30790@cs.comH------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scott Campbell July, 2003
