Is there anything else to consider, or any other hidden costs that:> we might not have anticipated with regards to licensing?FMake sure this 2100 is NOT an EISA-based machine. Ours has been a pain@for the past 2 years and was finally shut down today. SWXCR aka ARaid-array 210's are annoying. These don't appear to age well. WeEwere running NT 4.0, so VMS may be entirely different on this system.
You want PCI!BAnother potential problem is the raid controller wants narrow scsiCdrives. All the old RZ26-VA and RZ28-VA's are reaching end of theirEuseful lives. Even 4gb replacement RZ29's are getting hard to find inFreasonably new condition. Go with a newer controller in a pci slot andEnew drives. I'd sacrifice raid for non-raid and new drives if cost isGthe objective. New drives tend to last 3-5 years without failure if youAmake an effort to never power them off and always keep them cool./Pure personal opinion...use your own judgement! *JM*vmwiz@geonospamcities.com------------------------------Date: 11 Apr 2000 23:38:07 GMT2From: mathog@seqaxp.bio.caltech.edu (David Mathog)2Subject: Re: Advice Needed on New AlphaServer 2100,Message-ID: <8d0d0v$1fb@gap.cco.caltech.edu>^In article <38f39c06.519999389@news.flash.net>, bgoster@flash.net.NOSPAM (Brian Oster) writes:G>We are looking to upgrade our VMS Server with a used AlphaServer 2100.F>Our old system is a Dec 2000-300 axp. Under most circumstances9I would be inclined to dismiss this whole matter, except,L7I have had dealings with the "circuitsurgeon" and sincen6Ft Wayne, Indiana is home to both "circuitsurgeon and 2myself, honesty compels me to offer the following:9My encounter with the subject, ciruitsurgeon, had nothings8to do with the internet or decus (although I have been a7lurking decus member for not quite 15 years) but rather 9a local "swap & shop" weekly called "The Peddler's Post".-4The incident recounted below occurred 1-2 years ago 4during warmer months. I have heard the criticism of5Dan, the original poster, and only can state it's not.,worth the effort to dig out the exact dates.6We had an old LN03 attached to an RS/6000 serial port 9printing one particular job and as LN03's are want to do,r4the fuser unit decided it no longer liked us. When 4reading the "Peddler's Post" what should I find, but3an ad for a LN03 listed at $100.00. The seller wasc4Mr Gil, also dba as, you guessed it, circuitsurgeon.6I called the number listed, made arrangements to drive7to circuitsurgeon's house about 2-3 miles (6-8 min from-3my office. I was told that he had just removed thet5LN03 from a working system and it was in good workingt:order. (Although I seemed to recall he had some difficulty4finding the (a) feed tray for paper in. This struck0me as a bit strange since he had just removed it+from a working system (why wasn't the tray limmediately at hand?)t5Now accompanying me on this trip was my programmer ofl3many years and lady friend. She definitely did notp3like the place or the seller and said that he "gave-)her the creeps". My recollection is that-4after picking up the LN03 we went directly to church4as is our practice on Thursday evenings. Our parish+church is approximately halfway between thee6circuitsurgeon's house and my office. From the church3we proceeded back to the office and went to installsour bargain LN03. M2Guess what? I have messed with LN03's before, but3the printer which we transported very carefully andi4without incident never produced so much as (1) copy.3The next weekend I tried swapping trays, etc but to /no avail. We talked it over and based upon theh1atmosphere at the time of purchase we vowed nevera.to buy any item locally without insisting that/the seller demonstrate any claims made for his 3goods. $100.00 seemed like an inexpensive teachingn/example. Frankly, the visit was uncomfortable h,enough that I would not have wanted to visit/or insist upon an exchange or return for credite,of the subject printer. We just had a dread/concerning the prospect of having to deal with h0the seller. I am very glad it was only $100.00.0I can't say I would like to be in the Canadian's+shoes when having to deal with this seller.lWhat does all this add up to? c.1) I am very inclined to believe the original+ poster, Dan when he wrote words to the e2 effect that "the machine had defective board".2) Let the buyer beware.a------------------------------%Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 23:30:30 +0200y0From: "kl.grenouille" <kl.grenouille@wanadoo.fr>CSubject: Re: Where to find DECserver Network Access Software (DNAS)e%Message-ID: <8d05c7$aoc$1@wanadoo.fr>gJExcuse me but I don't know what is this.
