The EXACT criticism is that it's Ebeen done in such a way that is hideously Unix specific, whereas the Jproblem is a general one. One starts with a "configure" script, which is Lbad enough, and that it uses every unsupportable Unix specific trick in the Jbook to check to see which functions exist and so forth. If the guys who Jdid this didn't have their Unix blinders stapled to their heads one would Ginstead find "configure.dat" - a text file describing the capabilities @which are to be tested for and an abstract version of the build Finstructions (dependencies and such) and "configure" an ANSI C programCwhich could be built on any platform. It would implement each testGAS APPROPRIATE FOR THE PLATFORM based on #ifdef's when it was compiled.<(If done that way, the C RTL could easily enough come with aEstatic file containing all the answers to the various tests for that Kplatform, so that running configure would be nothing but a series of table >lookups.) Not only that, but it would allow platform specific4"makefiletype" switches, so that when you could do: $ configure -makefiletype=mms $ configure -makefiletype=dclEon VMS and generate either an mms style file or a plain dcl procedureG"make_vms.com". Ditto in the obvious ways for other nonUnix platforms.FPut another way - while autoconf is a portability tool between unices Hit is an ANTIportability tool between unix and all other OS's. And justFbecause you can get it to work in Cygwin doesn't make it a portabilityKtool, on windows you'd really want it to generate makefiles appropriate forIVisual C++ or CodeWarrior or other common Windows environment compilers. Regards,David Mathogmathog@seqaxp.bio.caltech.edu?Manager, sequence analysis facility, biology division, Caltech ------------------------------Date: 15 Jul 2000 19:50:33 GMT2From: mathog@seqaxp.bio.caltech.edu (David Mathog)LSubject: Re: I/O caching and UNIX evaluations (was: Re: got to remember ...),Message-ID: <8kqfa9$5pi@gap.cco.caltech.edu>In article <rdeininger-1507001131360001@user-2ivebf7.dialup.mindspring.com>, rdeininger@mindspring.com (Robert Deininger) writes:>E>When I read that the new GS-series machines REQUIRE a billy-box as aH>system console, I almost fell out of my chair. 24x7x365, or until your!>console goes BSOD. TCPIP (set service/etc/etc serv) will allow Fme to setup the mechanism that clones requests that come into the portHchosen for the app server so that's not a problem. The one piece of thisG(at the moment<g>) that I don't really see anywhere is an example or Jeven a description of what the event loop of a process that is the serviceLthat sits at a tcp port does. It's easy to find examples and code up "serverPevent loops" that accept incoming messages but they specifically bind themselvesIto a port, open a socket to the server they're operating on and sit there %waiting for incoming client requests.tH
The way you've described and that I'd like to implement would clearlyGnot need to specific the port# since by definition, tcpip is activatinguJthe process when a request comes into the designated port. So ... the codeIhas to be a bit different and "not" specify a port to sit at , but rather Kdo something else that would probably be made clear in a second by glancingeFat the main code a typical service program like ftp. (and that'swhat I can't find).KF
thanks for the response and if you know ofMany examples of actual service activated program code, I'd sure be interestedin getting a peek,K
           appreciateR	it - Micke

(I believe there is some discussion of this in the Sybase PerformanceiJand Tuning Guide; I seem to remember that the discussion is pretty vague).MOur experience in our shop (OLTP type application) is that the total time fortNa query lengthened significantly when we switched the transport from Decnet to7TCP/IP for a particular client <--> Sybase application.iGThe quick explanation is that client queries whose length is longer thetG"network packet size" get broken into 2 or more TCP/IP packets; Without NTCP_NO_DELAY the second packet may not be sent until some time (200 millsecs?)after the first packet is sent.vG(There's a more detailed description of all this in [IIRC] the StephensaN"TCP/IP Illustrated" book; I also have some place a longer explantion of this.#If interested, please let me know).(KThe above, of course, does not explain the error messages you are seeing inIthe log.
