When allIuser / database connections have moved to other systems, then that systemIcan be shut down or rebooted etc - all with ZERO impact to the end users.HGreat for planned maint such as HW/SW upgrades, tuning reboots, OS patchreboots etcLThere are a few situations that need additional considerations (long runningLdetached processes, people who stay connected for days on end etc) but theseare typically a minority.

The problem is, I want thembothIto be accessible under the same name for availability and load balancing, andLit seems the way to do this is to use the Internet VMSCluster feature of DECKUCX/TCPIP. I've enabled the feature on both machines using the same IP, andFfailover works well. I can shut down either cluster member, and when ItelnetKto the shared IP it'll bring up whoever's still available. However, perhapsLI'm mistaken in my belief that load balancing is supported. It seems that itLtends to stick to one node until that node goes down, even if I open severalLsessions. It doesn't matter whether it's the Alpha or the much weaker VAX. IFalready looked through the online TCP/IP docs, and there is no mentionLanywhere of this feature! We had many unexplained CRCL(Cyclical redundancy check errors) and many Lan errors. We eventually triedLswitching out our FDDI interface card in the Alpha (Alpha 4000) and this didHnot help. Replacing the wires to the Lan interface did not help either.FWe never tried the Stop and Restart TCPIP, we always had to reboot theLsystem. Therefore, I am guessing that this issue is NOT resolved in v5.0aat least of Tcpip.Todd.dL"Mike Price" <mike.priceNOmiSPAM@littlewoods.co.uk.invalid> wrote in message3news:24602da8.b7a5094e@usw-ex0105-037.remarq.com... 3> I hope someone has seen this before and can help. ?> We are running UCX version 4.2 - planning to go to 5 in a fewgB> months - and we seem to get problems whenever there is a networkA> glitch. The Internals and Datastructures book certainly containsAsome of the details, but it is probably difficult to read without @a deep VMS knowledge and its focus is implementation details notarchitectural design.b9Regarding the infamous buffer overflows. The they usually=appear in C functions getting a char array without specifying=Aa maximum length. That is getfoobar(char *foobar, int *foobarlen) Cinstead of getfoobar(char *foobar, int foobarsiz, int *foobarlen) - Fsometimes foobarlen is missing because foobar will be zero-terminated.@The most known example is probably the gets function, which many=people think should be completely banned from all C programs. GVery little of the VMS core are written in C (it is mostly Macro-32 and:CBliss), so it does not use C zero-terminated string at all. InsteadiDit uses VMS strings passed by descriptor. A typical string desciptor#(fixed length string) will contain:c - maximum length - descriptor identifcation - pointer to string itselfAAlmost all VMS system services and RTL routines uses this kind of descriptorswHfor strings. And since maximum length is always passed, then VMS has notHbeen as much hit by buffer overflow problems as the C operating systems.Arne------------------------------%Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 11:32:26 +0100e/From: Nigel Arnot <sysmgr@maxwell.ph.kcl.ac.uk> "Subject: re: VMS Security features6Message-ID: <009EB7EA.58E4041E.4@maxwell.ph.kcl.ac.uk>> J> > > If you look at VMS security holes (and there have been some over theH> > > past 20 years), the generalization "most security holes have to doE> > > with buffer overruns" is not correct. I'll guess I'll see how it's done when I buy the book.> F> Buffer overruns and stack implementations really aren't related, but> that's a separate issue.> 7Actually, I'd dispute this, if we are talking security.r@The classic unix/C type program allocates a buffer on the stack.GLet's suppose it then calls a subroutines with this buffer as argument.mThe memory pattern islinkage information$....buffer 0...i"linkage information to subroutine10(inbluding pointer to buffer and return address)...h#linkage information to subroutiner2n@(including pointer to buffer and return address to subroutine 1)... etc.GA hacker who has established that he can cause the end of the buffer toMKbe overwritten thereby has a way to rewrite the linkage information on the tKstack. He can therefore write his own binary code into and past the buffer,sLand pervert the return address so that when the attacked subroutine returns,Kit ends up executing the hacker's code. At which point your user-id (or the->whole system if you are currently privileged) is at his mercy.JSo, there is an advantage to be gained from not allocating buffers on the Fstack. If, instead, there is a VMS descriptor on the stack pointing toObuffer memory in a heap, then *even* if bad coding has allowed the buffer to be.Joverrun, all the hacker will do is corrupt the heap. And if it's some sortIof server process, the memory pattern in the heap may well be stochastic, Jdepending on what the server process has done prior to the attack. There'sIno way for a hacker to exploit this in order to get his own code executednCand no way to consistently corrupt data. Chances are the worst thatuKhe can do is that the server process crashes (with or without some "random"u2data-corruption getting into the filestore first).------------------------------End of INFO-VAX 2000.327************************
