I remember the upgrade manuals used to warn you to check4for something (maybe in $ dump/header/block=count=0 Esys$sysdevice:[000000]vms$common.dir? checking the directory backlinkOEwas to [000000], rather than [SYSn.]?) There was an elaborate method Fof repairing the problem, mostly a series of renames, IIRC. I haven'tInoticed any mention of this in years; maybe the VMS folks added something Bto the upgrade procedure that automatically detects and fixes the Fproblem? Anyway, it sounds to me that BACKUP thinks all the directoryEentries for VMS$COMMON.DIR are alias, so it isn't backing it up. But Gshouldn't VMS back up the contents anyway, as "lost" files? This mightiBmake it hard or impossible to retreive an individual file from theAsave set, but I think an image restore should be okay, since the RHdirectory file itself should be restored as a "lost" file, and the otherISYSn.DIR's that point to it (as an alias) should still point to the righte.file ID, and so should work after the restore.IIf you were doing an image disk-to-disk backup, I think the same applies.tFI'm not sure if ANALYZE/DISK will consider this an error. I think theDoriginal problem (from VMS V5 days) was that the disk structure was Cvalid, but not what VMS upgrades assumed, so ANALYZE/DISK was happyoCwith it. In your case, it might be that VMS$COMMON.DIR's header is Hpointing to a non-existent or deleted directory, or at least a directoryHthat doesn't have a filename pointing to VMS$COMMON.DIR. If this is the(case, I think ANA/DISK should detect it.?BTW, if this ground hasn't been covered already in this thread:WGAll that is in a VMS directory is a list of filenames and correspondingnBfile IDs. The file IDs are basically pointers to file headers in G[0,0]indexf.sys. All the other info about the file (attributes, dates, Fownership, protection, retreival pointers, etc.) is in the file headerFin indexf.sys. There is no reason why the same file ID can't exist inFmore then one directory, or more than once in the same directory underGdifferent names. These are aliases. Lets face it Alpha boxes have always given0B"great SPECint" particularly on an indevidual CPU basis. They have@also been pretty terrible at translating that CPU only benchmarkAperformance into actual commercial workload performance. The ES408=DS20 TPC results for example show Compaq appearing to require <30% more CPU resource than their competition to get the same?throughput and these are only recent examples in a long history,of good SPECint poor application throughput.?So thats why it's sad that Compaq keep trotting out the SPECint/<dog and pony show, commercial customers generally don't care=about SPECint performance, they are more likely to care abouto=application performance and Compaq havn't shown any benchmark 9results for the GS320 except for SAP and they included anAA2 year old Sun result on an old box running a different benchmarko?(really good comparison) and forgot to include a Fujitsu resultLthat was better than theirs.?It is also true that SPECint/fp is relatively inexpensive whilei:3 tier SAP, TPC-C etc are much more expensive to run. This9however does not explain why Compaq chose to announce theu;GS machines while making claims for the systems performancenthat have no backup.AThis lack of real benchmark results to back up performance claimsi?is par for the course, it was exactly what Digital did with thek@origional Alpha servers and wasn't that a great sucess. Remember8the 64bit DBMS marketing with not one relative benchmark8to back up the performance claims made for 64bit DBMS's.KNothing appears to have changed. I said in a much earlier post prior to theoFWildFire announcement that Compaq need to show much more than marginalLperformance leads between themselves and other platforms to get customers toHput them back on their bid lists and they can only do this by publishingKworld class "relevant" benchmark results. Publishing SPECint/fp results hasdLalmost no relevance to the target market that Compaq must make inroads in ifIthe Alpha is going to survive. Have you ever seen a SPECint/fp number forIDa S390 or a HDS box, would it suprise you to know that HP have neverLbothered publishing SPECint/fp/rate_int/rate_fp numbers for the V2500/V2600.Regards?Andrew HarrisondEnterprise IT Architects------------------------------%Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 17:12:38 +0100n From: steven.reece@quintiles.com1Subject: Re: Wildfire memory and installed imagesh>Message-ID: <802568EB.00591D34.00@qedilc01.qedi.quintiles.com>Hoff wrote:tG>>> NUMA: Non-uniform Memory Access.
