They may want to look at theaJadvice that the FSF makes available to Unix people wishing to re-implementUnix utilities under the GPL.eGFor example, some of the people best able to help may not be able to do1?so because they have too much knowledge of the VMS source code.eI>Yeah, I guess you're right on that score. Just reDEFINE SYS$SYSTEM /PROCESS or /JOB and/or make it aH>search list, including the system-wide translation as the second index.IThis does raise the question of what you are allowed or not allowed to doe8when re-implementing VMS utilities as freeware/GPL code.GFor example, after I have finished writing my device driver, one of the,Inext projects that I am considering is to write a Linux implementation of,FTPU. The ultimate aim would be to allow EVE to run (on Ultrix mode) onDLinux. Some of the questions that I have been considering are below.D[BTW, this is a _big_ project, but depending on how long it takes toGimplement the TPU library, it is looking as if it would be possible forrone person to do.]DIf I did implement enough of TPU to be useful, then I would considerHreleasing it under the GPL. However, this does raise a number of points:H1) Would CPQ get upset that I had implemented one of "their" languages ?F2) Since one of the goals would be to allow EVE to run on Linux, wouldFCPQ get upset if people started copying EVE from their local system to<run on Linux ? How about if only hobbyists copied over EVE ?D[The issue here is, because the code is in SYS$EXAMPLES, are we areEallowed to use it as we wish (provided that we knowledge the source),tEor are strict restrictions still in place ? The issue is that code ineESYS$EXAMPLES is usually provided as a means for people to borrow fromnHfor their own code; this is what I have done with LRDRIVER for example.]J3) [I want to make it very clear that _my_ intention would be to build theHmessage file from the ground up as I believe that the answer is that youcan't do this]:rJOne of the things that a TPU re-implementation would need is a TPU messageKfile. One source of this would be to take them out of the current VMS basednLTPU message file. However, I think that you would not be allowed to do this.Do others agree ?-JIf I do proceed with the project, I am considering implementing it in Ada,Ias I wish to improve my Ada skills. However, I am aware that if I were to9Dever release it, then it may be more accessable to people if it were

The discrepancy between the IDC and Gartner figures apparentlygHcomes from the fact that companies have shipped many Itanium servers fordemonstration purposes.-LThe Itanium's humble start, while not completely unexpected, underscores theJimmense challenges that lie ahead for Intel, allied computer manufacturersIand software developers that are gunning to make Itanium the standard forw%complex computing in the next decade.a8Intel says it isn't disappointed with the sales numbers.A"We're pleased with the acceptance of Itanium to date," a companypJrepresentative said Tuesday, adding that sales should increase once CompaqLComputer, one of largest server manufacturers, starts selling computers with	the chip.eAmbitious beginningsKItanium, one of the most ambitious launches in Intel's history, is designed'Kto run large databases and complex applications such as those that simulatecJweather patterns and require expensive RISC/Unix servers from the likes ofSun Microsystems or IBM.IIdeally for Intel, Itanium servers will become cheaper, more powerful andm6will contain wider array of software than they do now.LThe chip contains an entirely new architecture that processes data in 64-bitLchunks, rather than 32 bits like standard Intel chips. As a result, computerFmakers must design entirely new computers for the chip, while softwareIdevelopers must spend time and effort to make their existing applicationsrcompatible. KThe problem is most of this work isn't complete yet, and as a result, salesiof servers remain low.L"This is going to be an incredibly long ramp," said Dean McCarron, principalKanalyst at Mercury Research. "We expected it to do a little better, but notma lot better."DAdded Hugh Jenkins, vice president of marketing in Compaq's industryEstandard server group: "It is going to take a couple of years for theiKoperating systems and applications to be made available...and for customers- to tune their own applications."KJenkins sees 2003 and 2004 as the "real prime time of 64-bit applications.":JItanium has also been hurt by a slow economy and delays. Originally due inLthe mid- to late 1990s, the first version of the Itanium, code-named Merced,#finally came out at the end of May.rFPartly because of the delays and partly because of performance issues,LMerced has largely become a test vehicle for future versions of the Itanium.IThe next version, code-named McKinley, will be more powerful than Merced.JMcKinley is set to come out in test systems in the first part of next yearKand commercially toward the middle of 2002. Madison, an improved version ofoFMcKinley, is expected to arrive in 2003, along with a low-power budget*version of the chip, code-named Deerfield.KWith McKinley, sales are expected to begin picking up. By the third quartercEof next year, McCarron predicts that Intel could be selling a "couple8$hundred thousand (chips) a quarter."LBut the expense involved in making McKinley--along with other factors--could-keep sales of the upcoming chip moderate too.1FKevin Krewell, an analyst at MicroDesign Resources, predicted that theHcompany will sell around 100,000 Itanium chips per quarter by the end of2002.iLBy contrast, the Pentium Pro, Intel's first server chip, was selling 500,000Hunits a quarter after four quarters. And its Xeon chip went from zero toK500,000 units in four quarters. These chips, though, had smaller price tagsE
than Itanium.rLOne of the reasons for McKinley's bigger price tag, Krewell said, is that itLwill cover nearly 440 square millimeters in area--or more than twice that ofthe Pentium 4.J"One problem is that McKinley...is expensive to manufacture. It also meansLyields are lower," he said. "Not until you get into Madison and Deerfield in(2003 do you start talking about volume."JThe Intel representative, however, countered Krewell's assertions. Size isKsomewhat irrelevant when it comes to server chips, the representative said,,Hbecause of the much higher cost of servers. McKinley will be larger thanIMerced, he said, but the additional space allows the chip to contain morew!cache memory and computing units.bCompetition at home?KIronically, one of Itanium's biggest competitors won't be Sun, but the XeonfDline itself. Xeon already sells well and is compatible with existing	software.fKCustomers are also sold on Xeon. Glenn Bonner, chief information officer oflIMirage Resorts, noted in an interview last month that Xeon-based machineso6can effectively handle most corporate computing tasks.LA new version of Xeon for four- and eight-processor servers is coming in theLfirst quarter. The chip will run at 1.5GHz and 1.6GHz, according to sources,Kand contain Hyper Threading, a new technology that can increase performanceeFup to 30 percent by using internal computing elements of the chip moreefficiently.K"Unless there are applications that are really compelling on Itanium, Intel)Jis making its job harder and harder" through the continual improvements toFXeon, said Tim Shetler, vice president of marketing at TimesTen, whichdevelops databases.e------------------------------ Date: 12 Dec 2001 02:49:02 -0800+From: pierre.bru@spotimage.fr (Bru, Pierre)e$Subject: Re: NTP server with UCX 4.2=Message-ID: <1c0e37b1.0112120249.3200676a@posting.google.com>akhoffman@xdelta.zko.dec.nospam (Hoff Hoffman) wrote in message news:<uy6R7.367$BK1.7195@news.cpqcorp.net>...Sm> In article <1c0e37b1.0112100834.40771d7d@posting.google.com>, pierre.bru@spotimage.fr (Bru, Pierre) writes:> G> :my need is to have the Alpha get its time from my other server (be a H> :client) and at the same time, act as a server of next stratum. as theG> :clock of the Alpha is not good, I want it to be a client not a peer.V> ..
