This means that sooner or later (probably)Hsooner) VMS EOL will be set and I hate to think what this newsgroup willKlook like. Considering how vocal some pro-VMS people are, I suspect it will.1only just remain the legal side of death threats.CESecondly it will be business as usual. No marketing, no promotion, noIGlicense price reductions. Companies will continue to view VMS as legacy Iwith limited lifespan, and plan accordingly. Market share will drop for alJnumber of reasons (availabilty of staff & their costs plus availability ofIapps spring to mind). The merged company will continue to milk the highlyrHprofitable government, defense and telecoms markets until they can claim9VMS is suitable to leave as-is. Then no more development.?DWhat I would like to see is completely different and I suspect wouldJrequire VMS be acquired by a caring owner (any plausible suggestions?). AsBAlan points out, marketing is *critical*. Not just to bring in newJbusiness, but to make existing clients believe there is support for the OSBby its owners with some commitment to it. In addition the issue ofIavailable staff must be addressed, this means that VMS must regain a hell-Fof a lot of lost ground in the education sector. Projects such as BillJGunshannon's mean there are students who have more than just heard of VMS,Ibut companies want people with at least one year's experience on the OS --%even if they are just out of college.0II don't know how to resolve the problem of VMS in education, hell I don't:Feven know where I would suggest starting. However, this is as least as=urgent as the issue of marketing. Students go on to become ITnJdecision-makers, they need to be introduced to VMS early on if they are toCbecome fans of it and choose it over other offerings. A presence inrHeducation also helps with the number of apps which are available for theOS.bKNext point has to be the cost of entry-level systems. Small companies go onbKto become big companies, and they'll stick with the system they start with.oHIf VMS is too expensive then they won't start with it. Sun will win, andISun will have another long-term customer. With the touted margins on VMS,?Csurely whoever owns the operating system can afford to re-scale the"4licensing costs to accomodate entry level customers.HOf course, these points which Compaq's attention should be drawn to haveFbeen neglected in the aftermath of the Alphacide. Whilst I was amongstGthose disgusted and amazed at such a course of action, I cannot see thei7decision being reversed without dramatic changes to theT%management/ownership of the Alpha IP. Doc.-- y6The bigger the humbug, the better people will like it.K~ Phineas Taylor Barnum. http://vmsbox.cjb.neti------------------------------%Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 11:40:07 -0500K-From: JF Mezei <jfmezei.spamnot@videotron.ca>g2Subject: Re: Gartner hints VMS to be dropped by HP,Message-ID: <3BFD2A55.9B0EE4EB@videotron.ca>"Doc.Cypher" wrote:J> sooner) VMS EOL will be set and I hate to think what this newsgroup willM> look like. It would be interesting to know how relatively importantN> the two measures are (and how their importance compares to other performance4> measurements such as Stream) to major Alpha users.EA few months ago I read a benchmarking article in a German Linux mag,rHcomparing an Itanium 800MHz with Athlons (1.3 GHz ?) under Linux (SuSe?)Ewith gcc and the tuned 'ecc' from Intel. While indeed the test showed Dgood results in the FP section, everything else was rather lousy. InAfact, using 'ecc' even provided worse results on integer and esp.yCbyte-access heavy code, like MySQL ran slower with ecc than gcc. OfiCcourse, ecc beat gcc in the FP section. Still, with these problems,pCItanium is not (yet ?) a reasonable solution for those needing higheFinteger performance AND large address space, as databases, applicationservers and the like. DThe imbalance of int vs. float performance seriously reminds me (andCprobably not only me) to a classical RISC profile: almost on par iniHinteger with CISC (i.e. Pentium ??), but better in FP. Therefore, I alsoHexpect Itanium to assume a niche position in the near future in HPC thanBin general (server) computing. But, with less competition and wideFsupport of operating systems in future, it might become 'the safe bet'as SPARC was in the past. -- i*Michael Joosten, SBS C-LAB, joost@c-lab.de*Fuerstenallee 11, 33094 Paderborn, Germany,Phone: +49 5251 606127, Fax: +49 5251 6060658C-LAB is a cooperation of University Paderborn & SIEMENS------------------------------%Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 11:43:35 +0100h+From: Jimmi Aakjaer <aakjaer@post7.tele.dk>t!Subject: Re: JAVA 1.3 Slow launchc8Message-ID: <n8kpvt0m63jmbvienro4igbacem1rrmcph@4ax.com>FOn 21 Nov 2001 12:47:05 -0600, koehler@encompasserve.org (Bob Koehler)wrote:g>In article <4m3nvt4k68rhvfog2oae58tpnjin2gln02@4ax.com>, Jimmi Aakjaer <aakjaer@post7.tele.dk> writes: >> mC>> When i launch java with $java -version it takes about 11 seconds C>> before any kind of prompt, when i launch the old version (1.1.18y2>> installed with OVMS 7.3) it prompts in no time.>> eG>> I have tried to install all images in sys$commmon:[java$130...] withu>> no improvement.>> l=>> Does anybody have some ideas to improve the performance ??B>F> Sun and all the porters have announced that the later versions are<> slower than the earlier versions. TheeA}degradation of performance has increased over a couple of years,A}probably due to increased load. I have already used the analyzevB}program to see if there were any hardware problems and that looksF}clean. I am going through the Performance Management manual and cameG}across a reference to Autogen. It states, in a relevant context, thatdF}"the first an most important action is to execute the AUTOGEN command}procedure."EThis leaves out a few potentially vital caveats, like "unless someoneoChas been manually changing system parameters without also adjustinggDthe settings in modparams.dat". Fortuantely you can run autogen withDan end phase that is before it actually makes any changes so you can0review its report without modifying your system.AI'd also point out that, in addition to increasing workload, suchnDdiminishing performance can be, and often is, caused by something asDsimple as file fragmentation. If your commonly accessed files are inDhundreds, or thousands, of pieces scattered accros the disk this canEcause performance to drop off considerably. In such a case, adjustingeDsystem parameters is not the first thing to work on. The "out of theGbox" solution to the fragmentation problem is to do a full image backupoEof each affected disk, reinitialize the disk, and restore the backup.iAThis can be quite time consuming. The other option is to use someeDdefragmenting software, of which there are a variety of choices fromHa variety of vendors (for doing a few files, the freeware utility calledFDFU works fine, but this is not well suited to correcting a largescaleDproblem). You could possibly already be licensed to use Compaq's owndefragmenter, DFO. DAnyhow, you should check for file fragmentation before you mess withFsystem parameters. As always, consult the rather extensive manuals fordetails.F}In the Autogen help it also states that a good time to run it is when#}"work load changes signifigantly."O} F}Now, as I understand it, this script will automagically determine theF}best settings for any configurable system parameters. I fully expectC}to have to delve a little deeper than page 10 in chapter 1 of thisoF}manual in order to complete my task, but this seems like a reasonable&}place to start. My question is this:DNote: it doesn't exactly pick the "best" paremeters. Good? Probably.BBest? Only if you are very lucky. It changes settings based on howGthey all interrelate (some settings affect what others should be - thisaDis one of the main gains from using autogen, since dealing with thisBmanually can be very difficult) and, assuming feedback is used, byEcomparing current and peak levels of usage with the starting settingsoE(allowing you to either start with enough resources instead of havingmFto dynamically allocate more, or trimming away excess allocations) andFcomparing various percentages with target values (such as cache hits).GIt does work pretty well, but it is not perfect. It is, however, almostt always better than not using it.E}If Autogen happens to mess up the system, i.e. decrease performance,sB}is there a mechanism short of a full backup that will allow me toA}revert to the previous configuration. This is a client site andeE}though I am not a doctor, I would still like to adhere to the 'causee}no harm' axiom.IYour previous settings are saved when it runs - the old system parametershDfile (SYS$SYSTEM:ALPHAVMSSYS.PAR) is renamed to ALPHAVMSSYS.OLD. YouFcan revert by renaming the .OLD to .PAR (making sure it is the highestHversion numbered .PAR, of course). This gets the parameters, but AUTOGENJcan change some otehr things that this won't fix - like page and swap fileLsizes. It also generates a new SYS$MANAGER:VMSIMAGES.DAT, but this shouldn'tIbe a problem (if you really want to, youc an roll it back by deleting thetInew version - the advantages of a filesystemwith version numbers, as longt!as you don't purge the old ones).h}Any input appreciated!e} }Trevor OsatchukGRecommendation: don't let autogen fiddle with your page and swap files.lFAs usage fluctuates, it will sometimes fiddle with them needlessly andIis fond of reducing their sizes if you have set them high for some reasonAH(like preparing for future growth, or even "just in case"). Manage theirsizes yourself. To do this, put
pagefile=0
swapfile=0and perhaps
dumpfile=0&in your SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT file.GAlso, be sure that all changes that have been made to system parametersEare reflected in that MODPARAMS.DAT file. If you don't, those changesoFwill not only be wiped out by autogen, but it won't properly take themHinto consideration when making it's calculations (which can undo changesCand reduce performance). If changes have been made and not recorded Fsomewhere you are in a bit of a tight spot: running through the myriadBof system paremeters, comparing current settings with defaults andImodparams.dat levels, and deciding what has been changed but not recordedpIis probably neither pleasant or quickly done (I think there are somewheredEaround 300 paremters, most of which you should never touch unless you Ireally know what you are doing). In such a case you may consider starting Gthe tuning over from scratch by setting things in modparams.dat as best Fyou can and just fidlling with modparams.dat and running autogen every!few days until you are satisfied.h@You'll be better off if you follow the manual's instructions forIcharacterizing your system's performance in various areas and identifyingoFthe most likely bottleneck(s). Deal with any of those directly and let(the rest take care of itself in autogen.BAs the instructions on the bottle say: lather, rinse, repeat. WhenHyou fix one performance bottleneck, something else is likely to suddenlybecome the bottleneck.--- Carl------------------------------ Date: 22 Nov 2001 07:00:16 -08001From: keithparris_NOSPAM@yahoo.com (Keith Parris)s(Subject: Re: system performance question=Message-ID: <cf15391e.0111220700.2e677b1d@posting.google.com>x;trevor.osatchuk@nospam.pscl.com (Trevor Osatchuk) writes...E> I am a vms newbie and I have been given the task of discovering the0B> reason for the dimished performance of a OpenVMS 6.2 Alpha. Or the leader has come off (evenbroke). BOK this is the "do not try this on a live systems covered by fieldmaintenance" section.l<Remove the drive from your system. (TK70 TK50 quite similar)FThe silver coloured lid covers the take up reel and you may be able toBwork out if tape is wound on any significant way, if it is, assumeGyou've lost that tape. Remove the screws holding it down to gain accessl
to that reel.aHYou can try to remove the cart. There is an interlock on one side, thereGis a solenoid near it, you can using fingers, override it and allow thelDhandle to operate, slowly withdraw the cartridge. It may be free, inFwhich case all well and good, if the tape is mangled or inside, tough.GYou could use a standard 12v5v0v connector to repeatedly press and even<Fmanually assist the rewind, you may be lucky and recover the tape, butput it in the suspect pile..BThe tricky bit is the leader, this may be the root of the trouble.HGently unhook the tags, and I expect you'll find the leader will not sitGon the loading arm inside the drive, you need to gently place the smalleEhole in the leader over the dimple in the loading arm. Best way is tooEslide part of your hand using middle finger inside the drive and pushiFgently in the direction of the arm, it needs to flex a little as it isspring loaded.DYou may have fixed your drive at this point, take the opportunity to@dust it, gently clean heads with good tape head cleaner, and the!sensors. Replace cover and refit..G*DO NOT* try to clean any DLT type device above a TK70, the same fixing-Hrules apply to TK50's, but TF/TZ85 and above are sealed, so don't do anyof the above!!!t
