Very thoughtful.aJTo take a bit of a contrarian view, today's market is the IDEAL time to bepushing VMS.JCorporate staffing cutbacks are all the rage. Good people are being thrownLout with the bad. And all the while, the unix and Microsoft server farms areLbarfing and getting hit with viruses and causing all sorts of administrative7nightmares when there aren't enough staff to go around.tCToday, a dollar of revenue lost due to a server that's down is moremLimportant that $10 of lost revenue when the markets are hot. That $1 of lostJrevenue shows up as a 2-5x reduction in the multiple the market is willingLto pay for a company's stock It can impact loan covenants, guarantees, forceGstock option repricing, all kinds of corporate financial nastiness thateEcorporations don't want to have to deal with in today's inquisitorialLDenvironment (Monty Python briefly crosses my mind at this juncture).HAll of these are reasons why HP should be pushing VMS for e-commerce andother apps very hard NOW. JHell, go to a customer and ask them to put in writing how many times theirHservers go down due to o/s panics and viruses, worms etc. Then guaranteeHthem in writing that VMS won't have these issues for a minimum of 1 yearJfrom the date the VMS server they install goes 'live' in production - it'dIbe a very safe bet for HP to offer this (of course there's the fine print Ifor all the T&C's). A customer can put a dollars and cents figure on what-Hthat is worth to them. It's several differentiators all in one package -Lreliability and the conviction to stand behind it no questions asked. That'sGwhat makes a good supplier and a trusted partner. That's what HP has to Cdemonstrate about VMS to one and all - not just existing customers.nJThose of us here in c.o.v know the reliability of the h/w and o/s. What weHdon't have is the warm fuzzies about the owner of VMS. As the disclaimerKgoes - 'past performance in no guarantee of future results'. We need proof.sJAnd many need it in larger quantities and faster than it's being provided.LImagine how a potential *new* customer might view the situation. Digital wasGa big company and they scr*wed up. Compaq was a bigger company and they 6scr*wed up. HP is bigger still. The jury is still out.GTo come back to Carly for a moment....how many people were in St. LouiskBhearing what she said about VMS? As impressive as her comments andKpresentation may have been, she could stem a slew of impending VMS customerVKdefections and help HP's VMS sales efforts measurably by going on-record in Hthe WSJ, etc... with a message such as the one I suggested at the top ofGthis post. What is her reticence in doing something like this? It's the Hfourth quarter and the team is behind. What do you do? A series of 'Hail+Mary' plays? Or a strategic assault to win?1GI've always had a great deal of respect for Digital and the engineering1Fculture it spawned. Great products, with some exceptions, but it was aGcompany that could not market effectively. HP was also a company I alsotIadmired, mostly for the test & measurement side of the business, which iscGnow Agilent. That said, HP has for a long time been better at marketinge!expensive things than Compaq was.uHCompaq's BOD failed shareholders miserably. Ben Rosen et al. should haveLbeen kicked out years go. Pfeiffer was given walking papers for trying to dothe 'right thing'.DI have little faith in IA-64. Others will disagree. It was an effortIoriginated by HP when they realized that they couldn't compete with AlphaIlong-term, and that they didn't want to be in the FAB business. Intel andLHP's progress to-date on IA-64 has been less than inspiring given the amountKof money and talent thrown at it. HP should approach all the EV8 engineers,iIirrespective of where they are working now and ask them if they'd like toUEwork on it again.
