I, too, hate when any programFtries to be too smart about things. Sometimes it's okay if it brings aAuseful feature to your attention AND if it is easy to undo if notFwanted and easy to turn off if not wanted ever again, like "correct asEyou go" in MS-WORD which I loathe. I'm writing! Leave me alone. We'llFcorrect it later, thank you. I believe it is good writing practice notto correct as you go.DBut it's those who thrived on programs like WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS,DXtreeGold, and such, for which GUI wouldn't matter. As an example, IEhave relatives who are in their 70's, always want to point and click,Dcan barely type, and when I try to show them cool keyboard shortcutsBfor certain things, they resist or forget. People like these wouldCnever use a CLI. I cannot imagine the masses using a CLI to do whatthey do now with GUIs.BThere's a lot I don't like about GUI's (well, at least the WindowsCGUI), but there are many people who wouldn't buy computers that had2only a CLI. Each system (CLI, GUI) has advantages.Disclaimer: JMHOAlan E. Thatwould have been the first clue.<You can set the names of the icons to whatever you want. TheBprogram that it runs is EXPLORER.EXE. "My Computer" isn't the nameCof the program, it's the location you see when you run the program.AThe "Network Neighborhood" icon runs pretty much the same thing -?it just shows you a different place when you start it. For thatHmatter, so does the "Recycle Bin" and "My Briefcase" (if you have that).;They all are just Explorer showing you different locations.EIt is also called "Explorer" in various bits of documentation and theEvarious help sources (i.e. (also not IE) the help on the computer andthe MS web site).=When you use a command in DCL what is the name of the programDthat is run? Yes, we both know this is a trick question. In general,Dmost people neither know or care. With Explorer it is similar exceptCthat the name crops up in various places - in addition to the help,Ain versions of Windows with the task manager the executable names@are shown on the "Processes" display and the one that this is isBEXPLORER.EXE, although determining this is not so easy since thereCis always an EXPLORER.EXE running. Why? Because this program is theCprogram that displays the icons and menubar on your desktop and theGwindow that pops up when you double click "My Computer" (or right clickGand pick "Explore" off the menu) is just an interface that is connectedCwith that process that is always running. When you do that it looksGlike a new program is running, which is normally done in a new process,Gbut there is no additional process added to the list of processes shownHby the task manager. So it seems that what you have done when activatingGthe icon is actually just signalled the already running process to openEthat window. Note: I assume this is similar to how it works on W98, IEdon't have one to check. This is how it works on NT - or at least howFit appears to work: each such window that is open increases the threadEcount of the EXPLORER.EXE process by one. I have no idea how W98 doesDwhat looks like the same thing - does it even do threaded processes?I don't remember.GThere is, of course, the question of why you are still on Windows 98 - INT V4 was better, 2000 was even better than that, and in many respects XPKis even better that that. The two main (sensible) reasons for not upgradingF(and it really is an upgrade) are the cost and having hardware that isJinsufficient to run the newer versions. If the person having problems withGthe digital camera were using 2000 or XP this whole topic wouldn't haveIcome up since he could have just pluged it in an and it would work (well,Cinstalling the camera specific driver and rebooting might have beenJnecessary). USB support in W98 is not incredibly good (actually, I thoughtGyou needed Windows 98SE to get even that level of usefulness), which isFprobably part of the problem. NT doesn't support USB at all, which wasLdefinatately part of the problem (and apparently the whole reason for havingEto do the whole fiasco - wasn't the desired ultimate destination a PCErunning NT?). W2000 does support USB, as does XP. I run W2000 at homeGand it communicates with my digital camera via USB just fine - plug theJcable into the camera and PC, switch the camera to USB communication mode,Htransfer the data from the new drive that appeared on the PC to the hardHdrive, click the "removeable device" icon and shut down the device, turnFoff camera, unplug camera, go take more pictures or whatever. It mightGbe even easier on XP - they may have removed the manual device shutdownEstep (supposedly needed on W2000 to insure your data integrity and/orDsystem stability, although my camera has timed out after a period ofFnon-use of the connection and closed the connection a few times and it"has never actually hurt anything).--- Carl------------------------------%Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 17:45:02 -07000From: Mark Berryman <Mark.Berryman@Mvb.Saic.Com>4Subject: Re: Idiot (I know that's redundant) spammer'Message-ID: <3f2fed1e$1@cpns1.saic.com>Bradford J. > Thanks !> Georg GTake a look at the proxy that -2,-2 is coming in as (without a matchingeproxy,/assuming you enabled -2,-2 in the first place).VLThen look at the device that you are trying to mount. Is the mount point inJthe exports file? Is the basic device is there? What is the ownership ofthe Cvolume and the MFD ([000000]000000.DIR;1)? What is the protection?DIt probably works because the second situation provides a resolvableidentity0and is okay with the ownerships and protections.KTake a look and let me know. Email me here (john at o s s c dot [net]) andMHthere may be something else I can provide you with to get an idea what'sgoingnon.p-John------------------------------#Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 21:59:02 GMTs$From: Paul.Gallo@hp.com (Paul Gallo)Subject: Re: VMS License auditsd3Message-ID: <3f30286c.14658062@netnews.comcast.net> Try here:a/http://licensing.hp.com/swl/view.slm?page=indexoFOn Tue, 5 Aug 2003 14:26:21 +0100, "Rolona" <nospam@nospam.com> wrote:B>Anyone know where I can get a license audit done for VMS servers?>n>------------------------------#Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 22:00:47 GMTh$From: Paul.Gallo@hp.com (Paul Gallo)Subject: Re: VMS License audits 3Message-ID: <3f3028f3.14793296@netnews.comcast.net>o	try here:i/http://licensing.hp.com/swl/view.slm?page=indexcFOn Tue, 5 Aug 2003 14:26:21 +0100, "Rolona" <nospam@nospam.com> wrote:B>Anyone know where I can get a license audit done for VMS servers?>e>a------------------------------%Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 19:56:49 +0200tFrom: jf.pieronne@laposte.net Subject: Re: Web Apps for VMSr2Message-ID: <bgor80$5e4$1@news-reader2.wanadoo.fr>Paul Sture wrote:nc> In article <vzJXa.1425$qb2.200@news.cpqcorp.net>, "labadie" <tonari_no_tottoro@127.0.0.1> writes:o> I>>"Carlc Internet Services" <cc@nospamming-to-carlc.com> wrote in message ->>news:U4dWa.416$kl5.23885@news.uswest.net...e>>>>>oI>>>I've messed with MySQL a bit on OpenVMS. > version, but requires a few >>->>other things I didn't want to preload (likeh>>
