I you have a pure Unix style C-program, then it will not be able to do this.> O> Also, just so I understand correctly, it is correct to state that with $READ,M> the file structure is totally irrelevant as you get raw data stored on disk> blocks ? OYes indeed. In fact the file attributes of a C Stream-LF file are more or less Hfaked. The attributes always show the maximum RMS record length (32767) Oregardless of the actual maximum record length. That way any RMS based program Ican allocate sufficient buffer size and should be able to read the file, Lassuming the record size does not exceed the 32767 byte limit (and that can happen !)CIf so, then no amount of SET FILE/ATTRIB would change the behaviour> of the program, right ?LThat's right. I nice example is Mozilla. If you have a JPG file with binary Hattributes (512 byte blocks), Mozilla can use the file. It just can not Qdetermine the file size. Change the attributes to Stream-LF and it will show the
file size.MOne of the problems with the latest version of Apache for VMS is that it can Konly use Stream-LF files. There is a good reason for this, and that is the Olength of Stream-LF files can be determined accurately to the last byte (incl. Qthe <lf> characters). You could make accurate calculations for fixed record size Nfiles as well, but *not* for variable record length files without reading the Ofile first (not to mention other file types). Keep in mind that all files have Kto be transmitted in Stream-LF format, so a variable record file has to be converted during transmission.OIn many situations it is desirable to supply the exact size of a file, so that &is a problem with non Stream-LF files.------------------------------%Date: Sun, 24 Oct 2004 10:02:17 -04002From: "Jerry Alan Braga" <jerry.braga@noreply.com>(Subject: Re: JAR files must be stream-lf/Message-ID: <mLednTx27o77KubcRVn-sA@rogers.com>(where did you get the is FILE to utility0"Glenn Everhart" <gce@gce.com> wrote in message news:417AB9FD.1050408@gce.com...?>I use the FILE utility to bash the file to lfstream as needed.>D> Reading lfstream and reading fixed-512 give different stuff if anyF> of the reading code tries to interpret end of block as end of recordI> and acts as though a LF or a CRLF had been seen.
