The originalJ comments about letting backup perform the mount, yours and someone else's,L implied that it did not *work* reliably.  My only reason for posting in thisI subthread was to point out that with non-ancient versions of vms and with H reliable models of tape drive, I have never seen it fail.  True, in someI scenarios it may be more useful to manually mount the tape before running 6 backup. I want to output my log files to everyone but "set D host 0/log" won't work since I don't have DECNet running.  I'm usingF Multinet TCP/IP for all my networking needs.  I'm afraid of setting upF DECNet without enough knowledge to properly secure it so I'm trying toC find another way to log my terminal session.  I tried "set host/log D {host name}/telnet" and it connects but it won't log the session, itG creates the log file but doesn't put any output in it.  If anyone knows B of a way to log a session without DECNet please let me know.  I'llD probably just log in from another box and log it there.  I'll try to3 get the output out on the thread by this afternoon. D     Here's my guess so far.... - I'm not using /foreign in my backupG script.  Is this needed for the tape backup to work properly?  It seems G to restore fine without it but again it won't list the save sets on the C tape. I also tried "DIR {Tape Drive}:[]" and that also returned "No D Files Found".  This confuses me because, intuition leads me to thinkB that not using the /for switch would make the tape act like a disk device and then DIR would work. G     In anycase I'll try and post my script and output from the commands 3 on here today. Yeah, I don't like it either. I thought of this beforeG posting, but didn't clearly recall exactly what circumstances it occurs = in. I didn't think this was one of them, but you are correct.   @ Anyway, if he had tries my suggestion of adding /FILE to his DIR? command, he should then find the same file id for "both" files.   D Adding [] or [000000] may fix this problem in this case. And you'll be able to look to see if files' such as SYSCOMMON.DIR were backed up.     @ Note that [SYS0]SYSCOMMON.DIR is not a file. It is just an entryH pointing to [000000]VMS$COMMON.DIR.  vms$common  J The system I'm trying to restore is VMS 6.x while the lab system I'm doingD it on is 7.3-1. I dn't have a VMS 6 cd anywhere here but on the real( system it was used with the same result.  H The backup tape I'm working with now is an old one that was taken in May= 2004 and the system has since then been rebooted a few times.   J The initial problem here was that the systemdisk was corrupt to the extentJ that sysuaf.dat was lost and all logins where disabled. Try to get a patch (if F still available) for BACKUP for 6.*, install it on the system and then try the restore again.    B For me, the vanilla backup of 6.1 if I remember well was unable toG unpack certain savesets from a 7.2 installation, leaving my system in a E state of limbo and the backup I had done while temporarily at 6.1 was  flawed, missing a few files.  0 (This was from a 5.2-2->6.1->7.2 upgrade on VAX)    A Does your backup saveset contain the VMS$COMMON.DIR file ?  (with  BACKUP/LIST) ?  D If not, you can rebuild your drive manually. Do a /IMAGE restore butH make damned sure you use /LOG and record it to see any errors and verify which files have been restored.     C After you have done the ANA/DISK/REPAIR with the gazillion files in K SYSLOST, manually create/DIR [000000.VMS$COMMON] with the right attributes.   D From a template system elsewhere, find out which directory files sitQ just under VMS$COMMON. Use RENAME to move those files from SYSLOST to VMS$COMMON.   C Then, SET FILE SYSLOST.DIR/NODIRECTORY  and delete SYSLOST.DIR; and  CREATE/DIR SYSLOST.DIR.   C What the above does is make VMS forget it had "moved" all the files  under VMS$COMMON to SYSLOST.    F When you next ANA/DISK/REPAIR, VMS should see that PHONE.EXE is in theH SYSEXE.DIR which is in VMS$COMMON.DIR and not complain and move the file to SYSLOST.     ? There are plenty of other ways you could restore it. Ths library has two tape drives:  2 1 COMPAQ MSL5000 Series (Address: 1.3.0[1-GKA300])?    2   Drive 1:COMPAQ SuperDLT1 (Address: 1.1.0[1-SSRL$MKA100]) ?    3   Drive 2:COMPAQ SuperDLT1 (Address: 1.2.0[1-SSRL$MKA200]) C                                                                       L One of the drives is at firmware v82, the other at firmware V45.  That's theI one that occasionally refuses to let go of a tape when the robot tries to N collect it.  (This is usually Friday night, so that the Saturday image backups don't really work.)   0 I'd like to upgrade the firmware on the Drive 1.  O Cruising the HP site for firmware, I find that all linkns lead to a new version M of LTT, which I've installed.  (I note that they still have a .PCSI download, H rather than a compressed file, and the the record format on the PCSI are6 screwed up so you have to fix it before installation.)  L However, LTT claims it doesn't have any firmware images for this tape.  ("No& matching file" is the actual message.)  K Is this (another) packaging error in VMS LTT or is something else going on?   O Where can I get firmware for this tape?  What should the file be called so that M LTT will recognize it?  Will current firmware fix my intermittent drive fetch  problem? Burn it to a CD-R and you will get F something that can be MOUNTed. If you got that from Hunter's FILESERV,F be aware that its a very old (V2.2-7a) version and stands little or noH chance of working. It was the result of my efforts to repackage Samba asG something that would install directly from the CD without building from F source (the object libraries were provided in the kit I started with).  B The Samba-VMS (freeware) group is currently working at V2.2-8, andE multiple dated releases within that level.
