Sort'of like a 'subprocess' in this context.HIt doesn't actually make it *do* anything else per se. That's left as an2exercise for the 'spawned' process to perform. :-)BWays to accomplish that would be the easy way out, with a system()Hfunction call, instead of fork(), which starts a shell and then executes$the given command and its arguments.GOr to use popen() function to start a process and have it do something.BBut for Linux and typical UNIX OSes, the historical way of settingFspecific terminal characteristics is to skip all the shell and processEmiddlemen and set it directly via an ioctl() function call on the TTYdevice (e.g. /dev/tty).HYou would also have to make sure this was an interactive tty + shell, aswell, if doing it directly.EOr use a terminal-handling library such as termios' functions -- e.g.Btcgetattr()/tcsetattr(). This is OS-specific since some implements0termio, some termios, some completely different.EFor more details on the UNIX-side programming, questions are probablyHmore appreciated in the comp.unix.programmer newsgroup. :-) But originalFposter should now have a better idea of what he's looking for in UNIX.-Dan------------------------------#Date: Fri, 02 Dec 2005 03:39:52 GMT9From: Bob Harris <nospam.News.Bob@remove.Smith-Harris.us>8Subject: Re: the counterpart of lib$spawn on Linux/UNIX?DMessage-ID: <nospam.News.Bob-D92972.22395101122005@news.verizon.net>In article 8<1133492014.072235.273380@g14g2000cwa.googlegroups.com>,$ chris_doran@postmaster.co.uk wrote:> wob96@yahoo.com wrote:> > Hi,> >G> > I'm porting an ancient fortran program from OpenVMS Alpha to Linux,O> > needlessly to say, numerous problems, now I'm trying to figure out what the> > lib$spawn on VMS does?> >3> > open (unit=0, file=fname, status = 'unknown')*> > call lib$spawn ( 'set term/nowrap' )> >M> > From google result seems it's something related to process.
