It would have no impact on anything else in the file system. I This functionality is being asked for by users who prefer to see their 1Unix-like filenames without the escape character.FAnother thought that was given was that the switch would suppress the Iescape character only in those situations where the filename could still &be referenced in the manner displayed.DFor example, the command $COPY THIS.FILE.WITH.MULTIPLE.DOTS.TXT NL: Hworks but $COPY THIS FILE WITH MULTIPLE SPACES.TXT NL: does not. Thus, Hthe switch would cause Directory to suppress the ^ character when it is Iused to indicate multiple dots in the filename but would not suppress it 'when indicating spaces in the filename.GPersonally, I like this method with both possibilities being an option.>For example, Dir/Translate would suppress the ^ character (by Ftranslating the escape sequence) as long as the result could still be ?used by DCL (as is the case with a filename whose only escaped Icharacters are multiple dots) and Dir/Suppress=all would translate every ?escape sequence possible (skipping only those that resulted in unprintable characters).	Thoughts?

So even if it could restore your .DIR files ontoGyour new single-disk volume, the contents of the .DIR files would stillHhave pointers to file-IDs of the multi-disk volume and all the files in3the directory would point to non existant fil-IDs. ASo in this case, it isn't just a question of recreating the filesHproperly, but also updating the contents of directory files to point tothe new file IDs.EPerhaps one way to do this is to create a list that contains the fullBfile spec of the alias, and the full file spec of the actual file.eg:8[SYS0]SYSCOMMON.DIR;1 points to [000000]VMS$COMMON.DIR;1EThen, you can backup /IMAGE/NOALIAS and restore /NOIMAGE. It changesCall your fileIDs, but you can then use the list to recreate all theGalias entries (which your restore operation would have fully omitted).ESo the question now becomes: what is the best way to create a list of5alias file entries and the actual file they point to.AWhat comes to mind is writing a utility that scans the whole diskC(equivalent of F$SEARCH("DISK:[000000...]*.*;*"), and for each fileDfound, it takes the file ID, looks it up in INDEXF.SYS to see if thefile name matches.Ffor instance, when you get to [SYS0]SYSCOMMON.DIR, when you lookup itsFfile ID in indexf.sys, you'll find VMS$COMMON.DIR as file name, so youGknow SYSCOMMON.DIR is an alias. The remaining tricks is to get the fullfile spec of VMS$COMMON.DIR.)You can find the layout of INDEXF.SYS at:Lhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Files-11#Physical_layout:_the_On-Disk_Structure------------------------------#Date: Tue, 06 Dec 2005 21:06:35 GMT$From: "Labhras" <labhras@nowhere.pl>3Subject: Interfacing to an AS400 from Alpha Cluster<Message-ID: <v3nlf.3504$nA2.2835@newssvr22.news.prodigy.net>JAnyone have some pointers on how to grab data from an AS400 to an OpenVMS cluster system?0Is there a version of ODBC that will run on VMS?John ------------------------------#Date: Tue, 06 Dec 2005 21:49:28 GMT#From: hoff@hp.nospam (Hoff Hoffman)7Subject: Re: Interfacing to an AS400 from Alpha Cluster0Message-ID: <IHnlf.195$gH6.138@news.cpqcorp.net>cIn article <v3nlf.3504$nA2.2835@newssvr22.news.prodigy.net>, "Labhras" <labhras@nowhere.pl> writes:K:Anyone have some pointers on how to grab data from an AS400 to an OpenVMS :cluster system? C An IBM AS/400, rather than an AlphaServer 400 or some other box, I will assume. ) The connection is via IP, most usually.D I tend to prefer to use XML to transfer the data itself, but thereB are any number of ways to either access the data remotely, or toB export and import it, or to transfer it as a text format, or via XML, or via http, or via...1:Is there a version of ODBC that will run on VMS?B ODBC and JDBC clients and servers are available for OpenVMS fromD various sources.
