For instance, does the storage unit (under Stallard) haveHthe potential to be very profitable ? If so, then the question is how to$fix it so that it achieves its goal.<There is also the question of how to structure the marketing=organisation to properly cater to enterprise and to consumer.CThe new CEO doesn't have any political payback he owes to guys likeFWinkler or Stallard, and if he finds them to be inept, he doesn't haveto keep them around.FOn the other hand, the new CEO may have a clear mandate from the boardKand the board may have already made some big decisions on the future of HP.HCarly didn't seem to have any problems firing people. So I don't suspectDthat big rounds of layoffs would begin immediatly. (That had been anEaccusation of Olsen who didn't want to make massive layoffs, and whenDPalmer was given the keys to Digital, it dodn't take long for him tobegin a slash and burn policy.)DThis is where Gerstner was so excellent: because he didn't know muchDabout computers, he would force his staff to explain to him what wasHgoing on. So instead of having preconceived ideas of what had to happen,Cand instead of blindly listening to a few key people's opinions, hewanted explanations.@If I were in Hurd's shoes, I would ask WHY the PC division isn't=competitive with Dell. Are manufacturing costs higher ? Are4distribution costs higher ? Marketing ? Support ? FThe opportunity for VMS here would be to make damned sure that Mr HurdCknows that VMS has been neglected and that an infusion of marketingCmoney to announce to the world that VMS is alive and kicking woukldyield great results.------------------------------Date: 30 Mar 2005 21:26:05 GMT(From: bill@cs.uofs.edu (Bill Gunshannon)3Subject: Re: New HP CEO Announced - Mark Hurd (NCR),Message-ID: <3b0jrcF6dlis5U2@individual.net>,In article <-qSdneA6aZltNtffRVn-rA@igs.net>,&	"John Smith" <a@nonymous.com> writes:H> According to Associated Press, Hurd has a reputation as a cost-cutter.> ,> Wonder what he'll cut first - PC's or VMS?> "Now that's a silly question.......bill-- JBill Gunshannon | de-moc-ra-cy (di mok' ra see) n.
