When you consider the type of sweet deals Intel gaveDDigital/compaq to kill Alpha and port VMS to that IA64 thing, do youFreall think that Hp/Intel didn't give MS some sweat deal to contribute'to porting Windows to that IA64 thing ?GWhat is probably happening here is that the Intel subsidies for WindowsDon IA64 are running out, so MS is pulling out of that platform whichEisn't strategic or making enough money for MS to bother with. In theFend, if MS could make tons of money and grow Windows on IA64, it wouldHdo so and would market the hell out of that platform and not allow HP orHIntel to spread rumours about IA64's market potential being limited onlyto super computers.FLast year, when HP and Intel started to send strong messages that IA64Bjust wouldn't be "industry standard" and would have limited marketEniche, you can bet that Microsoft was already fully aware of what wasHreally going on. OpenVMS date conversions make use of 64-bit integers. VAXDTDMS performs divide and multiply operations on these by calling theHundocumented COB$DIVQ_R8 and COB$MULQ_R8 COBOL language support run-time*library routines with special JSB linkage.DThese routines are not available for the use of native OpenVMS AlphaHapplications. The initial attempt during April 2001 to replace them withKin-line Bliss-32 code did not work properly. Please refer to section 2.2.10)of the release notes for further details.DOne day in January 2002, the DIVQ and MULQ replacement routines wereJimplemented in C for Alpha, but unfortunately with coding errors that wentCundiscovered for about a year, even during intensive field testing.JOne day in January 2003, in response to a problem report from a very alertLHP employee and OpenVMS Ambassador (now an alumnus) in Ireland, these codingJerrors were finally corrected, along with two other software problems thatKhad interfered with some of the date conversions. Please see section 2.2.14)of the release notes for further details.DPorting to I64 did not require any further changes to these routines------------------------------%Date: Thu, 10 Nov 2005 11:14:27 +02007From: "Guy Peleg" <guy.peleg@remove_this_header@hp.com>6Subject: Re: Request for feedback - BACKUP enhancement*Message-ID: <43730f76@usenet01.boi.hp.com>:"JF Mezei" <jfmezei.spamnot@teksavvy.com> wrote in message&news:4372E694.35CFCF4D@teksavvy.com...> Guy Peleg wrote:8> > 1. I really appreciate it. I'm planning onFdownloading and creating CDs from the sources which y'all have pointedout.GIf you have a moment, I have 3 followup questions, the first 2 of whichE(I think) must be resolved before I can do much more. I looked around?but couldn't see anything that explicitly addressed the issues:C1) The first time I booted the Alpha, I ended up at the SRM prompt.DSince that initial boot, I've ended up at the AlphaBios screen (e.g.Dpress "ESC to exit"). However, when I press ESC I end up (as I wouldDexpect) with a message saying "No OS found". How do I get to the SRMprompt again ?G2) I have two disk shelves. However, in the AlphaBios option "Hard diskBsetup", it says "No online hard drives were found connected to theGcomputer". Now, both shelves are powered up before I boot the Alpha andFboth are connected to the Alpha. (If I understand the AlphaBios systemFstatus messages correctly, the DEC drives are accessed through a MylexGDAC960 driver. The AlphaBios system status shows 'Disk 0 SWXCR, SCSI #8Coffline'.) Would switching the cables between the two shelves be areasonable next step ?E3) On one of the disk shelves, there is a tape drive. At system boot,Cthe "tape drive in use" light comes on. After the system has calmedGdown, I press "tape unload" and the "operate handle" light becomes lit.CI lift the handle. What to do next ? I think there is a tape in theGdrive, but I don't want to force/break anything by pulling. (I'm pretty?familiar with IBM tape drive manual operation, but not DEC tapeoperation.)Chuck-with-the-Alpha-Questions------------------------------%Date: Thu, 10 Nov 2005 08:49:21 -0800#From: "Tom Linden" <tom@kednos.com>Subject: Re: TCPIP startup(Message-ID: <opsz1acjd6zgicya@hyrrokkin>.On Wed, 09 Nov 2005 23:50:23 -0500, JF Mezei %<jfmezei.spamnot@teksavvy.com> wrote:> Tom Linden wrote:4>> so I went into TCPIP$CONFIG and started manually.>>!>> Any ideas on what to look for?>>C> A very tiny screw lost in dust bunnies under your system cabinet.>>> If I remember correctly,J> TCPIP Services starting at 5.3 automatically starts enabled services andJ> restarts them if they fail and a new call comes in.
