Oracle has always supported OpenVMS file systems.GIn recent 9i and above, it doe require ODS5 file structures on OpenVMS.8> > Oracle on another node is entirely another database.>=20COracle with RAC is active-active acces to the same DB from multipleHnodes just like Rdb (ok, a bit different than Rdb in the locking scheme,&but from a high level it is the same).>> On my planet, a guy called Larry Ellison has been running=20> around for *years*B> telling everyone about near linear scalibility of Oracle in a=20> Grid computingB> environment. Just plug another box (whether 8086 or 390) into=20> the grid with6> access to the SAN and the workload is dynamically=20> load-balanced to utilize> this newfound grunt.>=20EYeah right and how does one justify paying $40K/CPU + additional 50%/FCPU (enterprise list) for those x86 RAC Windows/Linux/whatever servers<when a great number of these cpu's will be sitting idle? =20EThe issue with grid computing is that you need to have workloads thatAcan be sliced up, distributed, managed, and monitored across manyEservers. The concept and challenges and benefits of this model is notsomething new.=20FIf you are paying per cpu licensing, then it becomes critical that youFdrastically reduce the numbers of these servers to ensure that you are.not paying huge license fees for idle servers.HAlso, what about DR? If the primary site simply goes away period, do youEhave a duplicate number of grid servers at another site? Perhaps, but.. that's another discussion.CImho, there is a trade-off between grid computing (many distributedCnodes) and big standalone monster SMP boxes. There will always be a@place for both models, but imho, the biggest advantages for mostGenvironment models is in having 2-16 servers spread across a minimum ofB2 tier3 sites at least 25-50 miles apart acting transparently as a4single virtual server and Operations environment.=20GKeep in mind that for really mission critical stuff, even 2 sites is noDlonger enough and active-active-passive models are getting discussedmore often now.	[snip...]
