The fact that your attempt toH> address the topic of EV8's ability to compete with Opteron was equally@> incompetent didn't happen to be a rat-hole I cared to go down.>FYou are welcome to your opinion Bill but simply re-iterating that I amEapparently an idiot isn't really convincing, in fact it sounds like awhistle in the wind.GSo lets examine your claims of incompetence with respect to Opteron/EV8Ecompetition. Your best case for EV8 performance vs EV7 is 5x, I thinkDwe can safely ignore your attempts to hike EV8 to 2.5 Ghz just a bitCbeyond its origional design goal. Opteron currently delivers 4x thethroughput of EV7.FNow as I have pointed out for EV8 to deliver 5x 1Ghz EV7 throughput itAhas to average 2.9 instructions per cycle, deliver over 210% more6throughput using SMT and then it has to clock at 2Ghz.DNow lets examine these estimates illuminated by the analysis of PaulCDeMone who unfortunately does not turn out to be the friend you mayhave hoped for.E1. IPC, Paul is sceptical that EV8 will average the 2.9 IPC requiredGto make your sand based pyramid stand. Instead he winds it back to 2.5.C2. SMT, Paul also does not think that EV8 will deliver more than 2x&throughput due to SMT he allows for 2.93. Finally clock speed, Paul concludes that the agressiveGOO/SMT/Superscalar architecture of EV8 will limit its clock. (Power 5+)Fis also clock limited but to a lesser extent. Power5+ does not have asEagressive a branch prediction unit as EV8 would have had, it tries toEissue less instructions per cycle and it has 2 rather than 4 threads.FIncedentally you were right about Power5 I had not spotted the 2.2 GhzFannouncement. It was however pretty much the only example of where youhave managed to convince.DThat said lets re-analyse the possible EV8 throughput numbers in the?light of Pauls analysis (you introduced him so don't complain).GNow guess what even at 2Ghz which is an unlikely target for EV8 to have@reached today a single EV8 module would only deliver an absoluteGmaximum of 4x the throughput of a 1 Ghz EV7. And if EV8 was being builtEat 1.5-1.6 Ghz which is more likely then the maximum throughput wouldbe ~3x-3.2x a 1 Ghz EV7.DNow as you know EV7 is actually available at 1.3 Ghz and so the bestGcase throughput for EV8 relative to EV7 based on Pauls analysis is 2.8x<with the more likely differential being 2.1-2.2x current EV7throughput.AEven the bottom end of the range would have been impressive for aBsingle core particularly for FP, however it would not compete on aEthroughput per module basis with Opteron, Power5+ or T1. Nor would it7compete on a watts per module basis with Opteron or T1.ESince the discussion is getting rather boring and very one sided I amBnot intending to reply to any additional posts that you might make@particularly if you fail the politeness to competence ratio test(v-high,v-low0 at the momentHave a nice dayRegardsAndrew Harrison------------------------------%Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2006 09:53:17 -0600+From: brandon@dalsemi.com (BRANDON, JOHN M):Subject: Can you change the Ethernet Address of a DE500???1Message-ID: <06030309531710@dscis6-0.dalsemi.com>GCan you change the Ethernet Address of the DE500 card from the console? If not at the O/S level?John "REBOOT" BrandonVMS Systems Administrator*firstname.lastname.spam.me.not@dalsemi.com------------------------------$Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2006 13:14:21 -0500/From: "William Webb" <william.w.webb@gmail.com>>Subject: Re: Can you change the Ethernet Address of a DE500???IMessage-ID: <8660a3a10603031014p182e756aod5a017ca41bbc21d@mail.gmail.com>7On 3/3/06, BRANDON, JOHN M <brandon@dalsemi.com> wrote:I> Can you change the Ethernet Address of the DE500 card from the console?>> If not at the O/S level?>>>>> John "REBOOT" Brandon> VMS Systems Administrator,> firstname.lastname.spam.me.not@dalsemi.com>BDo you mean the hardware or MAC address, e.g. 00-00-F8-3C-16-D5 ?FYou can make it *appear* to be different, but [theoretically speaking]>unless you've got the stones to try swapping out PROM chips on2identical devices, you can't change it physically.:There was a thread about this almost exactly one year ago:L< http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.vms/browse_frm/thread/5ba9cc947a08=L358/51a24b0b2e4a68e4?q=3DDECnet+change+hardware+address&rnum=3D3#51a24b0b2e=4a68e4>HTH,WWWebb--CNOTE: This email address is only used for noncommerical VMS-relatedcorrespondence.CAll unsolicited commercial email will be deemed to be a request for8services pursuant to the terms and conditions located at#http://bellsouthpwp.net/w/e/webbww/------------------------------#Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2006 19:04:14 GMT#From: hoff@hp.nospam (Hoff Hoffman)>Subject: Re: Can you change the Ethernet Address of a DE500???0Message-ID: <Oq0Of.4023$Dp3.12@news.cpqcorp.net>_In article <06030309531710@dscis6-0.dalsemi.com>, brandon@dalsemi.com (BRANDON, JOHN M) writes:H:Can you change the Ethernet Address of the DE500 card from the console?D The hardware address, AFAIK, no -- well, not short of a PROM swap.A The hardware address arises from IEEE or other such entity, andD hardware manufacturers have assigned ranges that are then parceled out as NICs are built.A The physical address, yes -- DECnet Phase IV swaps that when itA connects and starts, for instance.
