I can't remember what the default is - but there is O> a block stored every "N" blocks that contains the checksum of all the blocks !> in the previous checksum block. The default is 10 to 1.@Unless you override it with /NOCRC, backup does a checksum (CRC)=of each block individually and writes this to tape along with?the data in the block. This way you can potentially detect bad.blocks that the drive hardware did not report.AUnless you override it with /GROUP=, backup then takes the XOR of?each group of 10 blocks and writes the result as an 11th block.>If the drive reports an error or if the CRC for a block is badHwhen reading back then BACKUP can discard the data block and reconstructAit as the XOR of the 10 remaining blocks in the redundancy group.AIf you lose 2 blocks out of the 11, you're in trouble and some of?your data will be corrupted. On 9 track, BACKUP will then keep.going and restore the rest of your files iirc.K> If a parity error is found by the tape drive, then the system will retry O> until it fives up. In any case, if it can't recover the data it will try to K> rebuild the missing data from the rest of the data in the checksum group.FIt's a redundancy group. And it's parity errors reported by the drive'and checksum errors detected by BACKUP.K> I remember the San Diego decus where the '750 was announced. They did a K> backup, scrapped an inch of oxide off the tape and restored from it - !! > Raid 5 on tape..EIf the inch of oxide had spanned a block boundary within a redundancyFgroup then they would have lost data. It's just XOR, not some kind ofAReed Solomon code. A 32256 byte block is about 20 inches long atC1600 bpi and I think an inter-record gap is about 1/2 inch. So theGodds were probably in their favor. Even an 8192 byte block at 5 inches>would have given them a good shot even without using oil, ironfilings and a magnifying glass.JYou wouldn't want to try that pet trick at 6250 BPI with 2048 byte blocks.I> Anyway - if it doesn't get it on the first pass - you are probably SOL H> (unless of course you are using an early TS-11, in which case I would ,> suggest trying another type of tape drive)5Legend has it that it stands for "Tape Stretcher 11".------------------------------ Date: 12 Oct 2006 10:35:43 -0700'From: "bclaremont" <msi1@earthlink.net>'Subject: Re: Reading 100 magnetic tapesCMessage-ID: <1160674543.251498.134410@h48g2000cwc.googlegroups.com>GI would try Peter's suggestion of using COPY first.
