Mon Nov 22 00:58:54 PST 1993 A1: tagfiles replaced. A12: lxpatch removed. (Old, obsolete kernel patches) english added back in. (international ispell) diska12 replaced. ----- Sat Nov 20 21:58:13 PST 1993 A2: Replaced: bin (added at-2.5) A4: Replaced: tcpip (added newest identd, and it works!) A5: Replaced: diska5 svgalib9 (upgraded from 0.91 to 0.93) ----- Sat Nov 20 03:19:35 PST 1993 Well, I knew the tamux package had its level of risk (hey - that's why it comes with a use-at-own-risk disclaimer!), but apparently it may be more dangerous than initially thought. I'm told it can let XFree86 use clocks that would normally be trapped and rejected. So - out it goes. I've moved it into /pub/linux/slackware/scripts for now. Just be advised that when the included docs say that it could be bad for your hardware, they mean it. Note, however, that I've yet to receive one report of trouble caused by it. ----- Fri Nov 19 16:40:01 CST 1993 One of the changes brought about by this round of updates is the removal of the shadow password system. I couldn't get it to work 100% correctly, so I've made it (highly) optional. If you are patching an existing system, you'll have to install the "noshadow.tgz" package in /pub/linux/misc before replacing any of the packages here that use passwords. (passwd and tcpip, for example) New: alpha, bootdisk, pkgtool, setup. Unless you have some reason to not use the alpha bootdisk and Q series, I suggest you try it out. The networking seems much better and more SCSI devices and network cards are supported. You can even install from an OS/2 HPFS partition using the alpha bootdisk. A1: Removed: shadow.tgz (shadow password utilities) Replaced: tagfiles Added: passwd.tgz (non-shadow password utilities) A2: Removed: make368.tgz Added: make369.tgz Replaced: bin.tgz (upgraded to fileutils 3.9, and new color-ls) diska2 e2fsbn (0.4) lpr (perm fix) usrbin4.tgz (removed some obsolete 'wares) A4: Replaced: man.tgz tcpip.tgz (non-shadow versions) A5: Replaced: diska5 e2fssrc.tgz (0.4) Removed: svgalib8.tgz (0.81) Added: svgalib9.tgz (0.91) A8: Replaced: mailx.tgz (Now replaces standard "mail" when installed) A12: Replaced: dip.tgz (v. 334a, with the recommended "route") diska12 Removed: english.tgz (old ispell) Added: ispell.tgz (ispell 4.0) F1: All the newest HOWTOs added. OOP1: Replaced: smaltalk.tgz (Same version, but recompiled, and with lots of samples and a tutorial in text/postscript) Added: stix.tgz (Smalltalk interface to X) Q1, Q2: Totally replaced with 0.99pl13r versions. X2: Replaced: xf_cfg (Added a new sample config for Trident. X4: Replaced: xf_bin (Added non-shadow support for xdm. I knew I never should have taken it out.) ------------- Mon Nov 15 16:04:05 PST 1993 A1: Fixed the tagfiles to refer to gcc, g++, objc 2.4.5. A10: Switched back to gcc 2.4.5. A12: Switched back to gcc 2.4.5. There were just getting to be too many problems with the new gcc/g++/objc 2.5.2 for me to want them "official" at this point in time. If you still want to use them, they are now in cc1/ and cc2/. ----- Sun Nov 14 02:09:54 PST 1993 TCL1: tk34, tcl71: replaced with copies linked with -lieee (fixes failed expr test) ----- Fri Nov 12 05:05:19 PST 1993 OI2: uib: fixed the paths. (usr/bin/X11 to usr/X386/bin, etc.) TCL1: Upgraded everything: Tcl 7.1, Tk 3.4. The new TclX isn't out yet, but should be soon. ----- Thu Nov 11 17:22:25 PST 1993 IV1: ivlibs31: changed library perms from 600 to 644. ----- Wed Nov 10 18:07:03 PST 1993 X1: Edited the tagfiles. X2: xf_cfg: upgraded fvwm to 1.05, just released today. X5: fvwmicns: New package containing color icons for fvwm or xfilemanager. Edited the "diskx5" index file. ----- Wed Nov 10 13:34:06 PST 1993 A1: etc: csh.cshrc moved into this package. "tset" added to /etc/profile, but as I had some problems with my keyboard after using it, I've left it commented out. If anyone fixes it (maybe a better termcap entry for console?) let me know. A3: tcsh604: csh.cshrc moved into the etc.tgz package on A1. A11: Edited "diska11". Upgraded gdb to 4.11. XAP1: Edited "diskxap1", tagfiles, and added "tamux.tgz". "tamux" is the X windows configuration system that used to come with TAMU, but with an Xconfig updated to work with XFree86 2.0. I used it to set up an S3 local bus system yesterday and it worked great! XAP2: xrest: fixed the complaint from "xbombs" about not finding the score file, although it still won't write to it. ----- Wed Nov 10 02:05:32 PST 1993 X2: xf_cfg replaced (fixed permissions). ----- Tue Nov 9 17:20:40 PST 1993 A1: New tagfiles. A2: Bogus links removed from bin. These bad links in /usr/bin should be deleted: fastboot, fasthalt, shutdown, reboot. A10: Edited diska10. Deleted gcc245, gxx245. Added gcc252, gxx252. That's right, GCC 2.5.2. Look in /pub/linux/slackware/info if you want the info files for it. A12: Edited diska12, deleted obj245, added obj252. Q1, Q2: All new. Alpha kernels and source 0.99pl13q (with builtin HPFS read only support). alpha: New alpha bootdisk with 0.99pl13q kernel and latest "setup" and "pkgtool". ----- Mon Nov 8 23:23:35 PST 1993 A1: old .xinitrc removed from etc. OI1: oimisc: paths changed to allow installation from the boot disk. OI2: oidemos, oidoc: fixed the same problem on install from the boot disk. ----- Mon Nov 8 21:02:29 PST 1993 A5: bin4 upgraded to add 'tset' utility. ----- Mon Nov 8 02:59:04 PST 1993 New: "bootdisk", "alpha" bootdisk, setup, pkgtool. Major revisions to the installation scripts. Holding down the ALT key and following the instructions using the alpha bootdisk should now allow installation on IBM Valuepoints and PS/1s with the strange BIOS problems. You will have to install a kernel from the Q series since .99pl13 had problems accepting the hd=cyl, hds, secs flag. I don't have one of these types of computers, so it hasn't been thoroughly tested. Fixed some bugs in the "makeflop" script. A1: etc upgraded to remove /etc/fstab so reinstalling etc won't clobber that file. Reinstalling etc probably still isn't offically a good idea yet, but it's getting closer. A7: Changed the compression on some manpages in elm2421 from .Z to .gz. A9: Changed the compression on the bc manpage from .Z to .gz. A12: Changed permissions in man2. X3: Fixed 2 bad links in xman1. ----- Fri Nov 5 01:24:21 PST 1993 Today's special: A8: ncurses upgraded from 1.7 to 1.8, disk a8 edited. X4: xf_bin changed to add a newly patched xman that doesn't have the scrolling bug and can use ".z", ".Z", and ".gz" compression. Diffs for the fix are in /pub/linux/misc/xmandiff.tgz if anyone's interested in the source. ----- Thu Nov 4 17:43:12 PST 1993 A4: cnews: fixed a few incorrect permissions. ----- Wed Nov 3 22:46:14 PST 1993 I just noticed that the new fvwm was released, and had to have it :^) X2: xf_cfg replaced to upgrade fvwm. Well, that should be enough for one day. ----- Wed Nov 3 20:09:02 PST 1993 This should do it! A2: ps replaced. (w wasn't working, but now it is.) ----- Wed Nov 3 19:24:55 PST 1993 alpha.gz and bootdisk.gz replaced with versions containing new pkgtool and setup scripts. These are not major changes, so if you've already downloaded the other ones, don't worry about it. I fixed a typo in setup and made the pkgtool script somewhat less verbose. A new pkgtool and setup were put in /pub/linux/slackware/scripts. A14: groff changed to fix some incorrect file permissions. ----- Wed Nov 3 17:39:30 PST 1993 Just a couple more changes: A2: ps updated to procps-0.8, diska2 edited. X4: diskx4 edited to fix a name typo that caused package xfonts1 to show no description. X5: diskx5 edited to fix the same problem. ----- Wed Nov 3 16:07:45 PST 1993 I've had a last minute request to move xlock out of the xrest.tgz package, so it's been removed and added to disk X5 and "xlock.tgz". X1: tagfiles changed to list xlock package. X5: xlock package added. diskx5 edited. XAP2: xrest package edited to remove xlock. diskxap2 edited. ----- Tue Nov 2 17:24:40 PST 1993 Slackware 1.1.0 with XFree86 2.0 is released. The setup and pkgtool scripts have been improved. Pkgtool is a lot slower when removing packages now, but that's because it checks to make sure each file is not part of any other package before removing it. This should fix most of the problems people have been reporting with the package maintenance system. There is a new bootdisk that contains these scripts. If you feel brave and want to try .99pl13p, use the alpha.gz disk as your bootdisk, and get the Q series containing the alpha kernel images and source. First off we'll list the changes to the A series: A1: Changed: base, devs, diska1, scsikern, tagfiles. A2: Changed: bin, diska2. Deleted: syslogd. A4: Changed: keytbls, man. A6: Changed: diska6. Added: syslogd. A9: Changed: inc444. A10: Changed: gcc245. A11: Changed: diska11, gdb (to 4.10). Moved: smalltalk (to oop1) A12: Changed: diska12. The X series has been completely changed around. There are now 4 sets of disks having to do with X: X: The base XFree86 2.0 system, with fvwm and rxvt 1.5. XAP: Applications for X. XD: X development. XV: XView 3.2 - OpenLook Window Manager and XView development kit. Some of the files from the X series of Slackware 1.0.5 will still work with Slackware 1.1.0's X collection. If you don't see it listed here, don't try to recycle it. X6: seyon (size: 133883, moved to xap1) workman (size: 181826, moved to xap1) xfileman (size: 192635, moved to xap1) xfm12 (size: 82315, moved to xap2) xpm32g (size: 155813, moved to x2) X7: xv32_sa (size: 127112, moved to xv1) xv32_so (size: 854927, moved to xv1) xvol32 (size: 453903, moved to xv1) X8: xv32_a (size: 848510, moved to xv2) xv32exmp (size: 232996, moved to xv2) xvinc32 (size: 346301, moved to xv2) X9: gs_x11 (size: 198531, moved to xap1) ----- Fri Oct 29 21:48:13 PDT 1993 New bootdisk containing non-SLS-/install dir killing pkgtool. These are also in /pub/linux/slackware/scripts, and setup and pkgtool should work fine under SLS now. (but why... ?) And yes, pkgtool has been patched to fix the 777 perm on root. Apparently, some packages were created in directories with rwxrwxrwx perms and installing these with pkgtool left / with these permissions. The pkgtool script now makes sure the permissions are correct on / as it exits, but this security hole could still exist while these packages are being installed. Go single-user before running pkgtool if this is a concern. A4: man: ftpaccess manpage, updated gcc g++ cpp pages. X6: xrest: fixed Xmodmap.* perms. X8: xvmenus: fixed /.Xmodmap perm. Y1: bsdgames: updated to version 1.3, with some new games. disky1: notes new version # and games. F1: manyfaqs: all the latest. ----- Tue Oct 26 22:47:17 PDT 1993 A5: comms: minicom upgraded to v. 1.5 beta (with scrollback!) A11: gp9600: minor change to /etc/minirc.dfl (up/download from .) ----- Tue Oct 26 19:26:49 PDT 1993 A1: tagfiles replaced. A3: term107x removed, term108x added, diska3 edited. A5: term107s removed, term108s added, diska5 edited. ----- Mon Oct 25 20:43:55 PDT 1993 A12: f2c: Upgraded to v. 0.9 with shared library support. ----- Mon Oct 25 16:44:41 PDT 1993 A1: devs: removed /dev/tty21 random unknown file [tm] ----- Mon Oct 25 12:25:45 PDT 1993 I still haven't announced 1.0.5 officially, so don't blame me ;^) Here's what's been done recently: A8: ghostscr: New version with SVGAlib support. The /usr/bin/gs binary in this package DOES NOT support X11 output. A new package in the X series provides a replacement binary for systems with X windows. gsfonts1: Moved from /usr/local/ghostscript fonts into /usr/lib/gh...... diska8 was edited to give new info. A9: inc444: Fixed a symbolic link that may not even be necessary. gsfonts2: Moved fonts into /usr/lib/ghostscript/fonts. A11: gonzo: Changed the install script and removed the extra copies of passwd and group so that the package is kinder to your system if you add or remove it. X6: xrest: ghostview upgraded from 1.4.1 to 1.5, man page added. X7: xv32_so: Fixed a bad link in /usr/openwin/lib. X9: gs_x11: New package. This needs to be installed on top of ghostscr.tgz to provide the X11 driver for ghostscript. diskx9: Adds information about gs_x11.tgz. ----- Thu Oct 21 23:55:15 PDT 1993 Slackware 1.0.5 is released. The 1.0.4 distribution has been moved to /pub/linux/old, and will be deleted after a while, so get it soon if you need it. This release includes the 4.4.4 C libraries and the new dynamic linker loader. Some software could be broken from these changes, but if this happens we'll all work through it together. :^) Also new this version: All symbolic links have been removed from the packages and replaced with installation scripts that create them. As a result, you can install new software over old software without having to wipe out your drive. Many of the changes in this Slackware release are to prepare for the upcoming release of XFree86 2.0. When this is released, it will be possible to install only the changed packages onto an existing Slackware 1.0.5 system. There is now a "rescue" disk since there seems to be some need for it (there was here, anyway). It's got an editor, filesystem utilities, lilo, and man pages. Sorry, TCP/IP won't fit. These packages had some major changes made to them: A1: Edited the tagfiles. Replaced: etc (ld.so related changes), base (removed duplicates) A2: bin (at-2.3 and other changes) bin (added ld.so and new GNU fileutils) shlibs (upgraded to libc.so.4.4.4 and libm.so.4.4.4) usrbin4 (removed duplicates) util (new package - selected util-etc-2.1, util-usrbin-2.0, util-bin-2.0 files) e2fsbin (upgraded to v. 0.3d) A3: sysvinit (removed old last) A4: tcpip (slight reconfiguation: multi on) man (lots of new man pages, new whatis) A5: bin4 (removed duplicates) A6: binutils (upgraded to v. 1.9l1) A8: Removed winapi02. It wasn't doing me any good. A9: Removed inc441, added inc444. A10: gcc245 (removed specs file - the new one is in lib444.) gxx245 (new libg++.a) A11: Removed libc441, added libc444 A12: f2c (fixed f77 perms) new: man2 (man pages from manpages-1.0.tar.gz) moved to this disk from disk a14: lxpatch, dip A13: butils10 (xfsck, mkxfs renamed to work in the normal way as well as through the mkfs/fsck frontend) new: man3, manpgs (man pages from manpages-1.0.tar.gz) new: extra444 (debugging/profiling libraries) A14: man2 deleted. mv: lxpatch, dip ==> disk a12 X6: xfileman: With Slackware license notice added. seyon: help file added. X7: xv32_sa, xv32_so, xvol32 (Bugfix release of Xview - 5.1) X8: xv32_a, xv32exmp, xvinc32 (Xview release 5.1) Many of the description files changed. Sorry, but I lost track of which ones. You might want to just get all the disk* files. At least they're small. The files listed below had symbolic links moved into the installation scripts. Unless they're listed above, no other changes were made to them. A1: base, devs, etc, lilo A2: bin, gzip124, lpr, syslogd, util, zoneinfo A3: sysvinit, tcsh604, term107x A4: keytbls, man, tcpip, bin4 A5: comms, elfabi, jove4147 A7: tin12p2 A8: mailx A10: gcc245 A13: butils10, smail A14: groff X1: libgr13, xbase13 X2: xcolor, xmono X3: xprog13 X6: seyon, xpm32g, xrest X7: xv32_so, xvol32 X8: xvinc32, xvmenus X9: xs3 X10: xpexb IV1: ivincs OI1: oilib Y1: bsdgames ----- Sun Oct 17 13:39:12 PDT 1993 A2: changed bin.tgz (to upgrade from at-2.1 to at-2.3) ----- Thu Oct 14 02:57:09 PDT 1993 Yet another bootdisk has been uploaded. This one allows you to manually mount your target partitions prior to running "setup" if the autodetection isn't working on your system. See the SLACKWARE_MINI_FAQ for details on using this feature. Also - there are new "setup" and "pkgtool" scripts in /pub/linux/slackware/scripts that can be put in your /etc and allow you to add software to your system by typing "setup" and _without_ having to boot the boot/install disk. (NOTE: you might still have to use the bootdisk to add software via NFS, but I'm working on that) One more thing - there was a minor change to butils10.tgz on disk a13. The xiafsprogs were given back the normal names and links to them were put in /etc/fs instead. ----- Mon Oct 11 23:29:32 PDT 1993 Another bootdisk fix - setup made the filesystem type "e" for non-root ext2 partitions. Sorry! :^) Anyway, if you just want to get the new setup script and install it yourself, it's in /pub/linux/slackware/scripts. To install it, make sure your boot disk is not write protected, and then boot it holding down the shift or alt key. Enter "floppy" at the LILO prompt, mount a partition or floppy where the new setup script can be found, copy it into /bin, "sync", and pop the disk out. Users of the 5.25" boot disk can modify their 3.5" boot/install disk using a similar method. Make sure the 3.5" disk is not write protected, and boot like above (but with the 5.25" bloader disk, or course), entering "debugb" at the LILO prompt. Proceed as above. If this sounds too complicated - just get the new bootdisk or bootdisk.gz. :^) ----- Sun Oct 10 03:17:11 CDT 1993 I made a couple changes to the ObjectBuilder disks. First, I had trouble fitting all the files in /oi1 onto one disk, so oiman.tgz was moved from oi1 to oi2. The files diskoi1 and diskoi2 were also edited as a result. Also, I made a slight change to the installation script of oilib.tgz on disk oi1 to make it work with any Bourne shell clone, and not just bash. I also had it make the link: /usr/include/sysent.h -> /usr/include/unistd.h so that more of the demos would compile properly. ----- Sat Oct 9 05:42:43 CDT 1993 Well, it seems the bootdisk still couldn't add software to systems that used tabs to seperate the fields in /etc/fstab. This bug has been fixed, and support has been added for xiafs in addition to ext2. You can now take your pick when you install. The bloader disk was also replaced to add kernel support for xiafs. If you have any problems with the new bootdisk or bloader, please let me know. ----- Thu Oct 7 14:58:52 PST 1993 A new bootdisk has been uploaded that uses the new ash shell, and should fix some bugs in "setup" - specifically, if your machine hung when your /etc/fstab was scanned, hopefully it will now work. Also, you can format your partitions manually before using setup if you like (but you don't have to). And you may, at your option, check the sectors on your partitions when you format within setup. ----- Tue Oct 5 17:53:59 PDT 1993 I thought I'd fixed the xdm shadow problems, but when I checked it out I found that 1.0.4 still has the old xdm in it. So, the problem has been fixed in package xbase13.tgz on disk X1. The fix involved changing the xdm binary to one that used shadow passwords, setting the proper permissions on it, and adding: DisplayManager.*.terminateServer: true to the file /usr/X386/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-config. It should be noted that this is a workaround for a bug (signal handling problem?) that could get fixed someday. (Or so we all hope. :^) In addition - a package named xdmfix.tgz can be found in /pub/linux/misc. This will fix the xdm problems described above without forcing you to reinstall the whole xbase13 package. Just use /etc/pkgtool to install it and xdm should work fine. Remember to start xdm with "exec xdm", or someone could switch to your root console from which you started xdm! ----- Mon Oct 4 21:13:27 PDT 1993 First new change, additions to this list will be entered at the top, not the bottom. Just one more thing we do to make your Linux experience slackful. :^) Also: etc.tgz has changed, but in a very minor way. A couple lines were added to /etc/rc to clean stale hunt sockets out of /tmp if they are found at boot. ------------ Here's the old, newer stuff at the bottom ChangeLog: Fri Oct 1 02:16:41 PDT 1993 Disclaimer: I'd just download the whole thing if I were you. I must have forgotten to log something. ;^) The following changes are required to upgrade a fully up-to-date 1.0.3 disk set to 1.0.4. Check the file OldChangeLog if you want to be sure you were up to date with your old disks before attempting to upgrade them. New bootdisk, bootdisk.gz. New bloader, bloader.gz disks for loading the 3.5" bootdisk from a 5.25" boot drive. (mv diskx11 diskx10) Y1: Changed: bsdgames In addition, the Interviews libraries, includes and applications for X have been moved to IV1 and IV2. The older Tcl/Tk has been moved to TCL1 to make the upgrade to the new versions simpler. Also, the Object Builder system can be found as disks OI1 - OI3. Version number changed to 1.0.4. Sun Oct 3 11:06:28 PDT 1993 I hate to be making changes again this soon, but a number of new things came which had to be included, and a few programs needed upgrading. Here's the latest round: bootdisk: Added v.0.3c e2fsprogs. A1: Changed: tagfiles A2: Changed: bin: Added at-2.0. (Just for you, Andreas. :^) diska2 e2fsbin: from v0.3b to v0.3c. A2: Changed: bin (at-2.0 replaced with at-2.1) Sun Oct 3 17:06:00 PDT 1993 bloader (the drive b: boot disk loader) has been replaced, and the instructions in README_5_25_install have been changed somwhat. This disk should cure the problems some machines were having.
