This is FreeS/WAN code snapshot "snap1999Jul14b". It is a
snapshot of work in progress, and we do not promise anything
about it; it might not even compile. Beware.

The rest of this file, like everything in this snapshot, may be
out of date or inconsistent with other files. Again, beware.

This is release 1.01+ of Linux FreeS/WAN, our freely-redistributable IPSEC
implementation. See http://www.xs4all.nl/~freeswan/ for current news and
pointers to more recent releases (if any). The BUGS file lists bugs that
we consider major; the CHANGES file lists the major things that have been
done since last time.

The current development and target systems for FreeS/WAN are RedHat 5.2
with a 2.0.37 kernel, although we are in the process of switching to RH6.0
with 2.2.10. It's likely to work with other Linux distributions using
2.0.xx and 2.2.x kernels; if modifications are necessary, please tell us
what you had to do, and we'll try to fix it so it'll drop in cleanly in
future. Other systems are a lower priority but we'd still like to hear
details if you try it.

Several high-level documents are in the doc directory. Most are in HTML
format; do "lynx doc/index.html" to read them. See doc/README for two
methods of getting plain-text versions if required. doc/index.html is an
index of the documents, and doc/roadmap.html is a guide to what's where in
this distribution.

Unpacking the distribution needs about 5MB, and compiling it maybe another
5MB. For setup procedures, see the doc/setup.html. The INSTALL file only
describes the mechanics of installing the software, not how to use it.

Feedback is welcome, preferably (for legal reasons, among others) to the
public linux-ipsec mailing list, located at <linux-ipsec@clinet.fi>.
(Caution: that mailing list goes all over the world. If you are located
in the US, or are a US citizen, read doc/exportlaws.html before sending
mail!) If you're reporting a problem with the software, we ask that you
read doc/prob.report first.

The bulk of this software is under the GNU General Public License; see
COPYING. Some parts of it are not; see CREDITS for the details.
