I. Overview of the PSU/LCS VMS Internet Gopher Server.
======================================================

The Internet Gopher is a distributed document delivery service. It
allows a neophyte user to access various types of data residing on
multiple hosts in a seamless fashion. This is accomplished by
presenting the user a hierarchical arrangement of documents and by
using a client-server communications model. The Internet Gopher
Server accepts simple queries, and responds by sending the client a
document.

The PSU/LCS VMS Internet Gopher Server is a port of the Unix implementation,
version 1.2.1.6. This Unix version is dated 9-January-1993 and is available
at the prime gopher site located at <boombox.micro.umn.edu>. This document
addresses only the PSU/LCS VMS Internet Gopher Server; see the Unix sources
for those implementations.

This directory contains the *WORKING SOURCE CODE* for the Library Computing
Services organization's work on a VMS Gopher Server. As such it is dynamic
and no warranty is offered or implied. The code is available for any who wish
to retrieve it. All that is asked is that credit be given where credit is due.
