% DIGITALSoftwareProductDescriptionC___________________________________________________________________CPRODUCT NAME: Spiralog File System for OpenVMS Alpha SPD 60.48.01 Version 1.1DESCRIPTIONDThe Spiralog File System for OpenVMS[TM] Alpha is an optional compo-+nent of the OpenVMS Alpha operating system.FSpiralog is an enhanced 64-bit file system that coexists with Files-11F(ODS-2), the original OpenVMS Alpha file system. Spiralog and Files-11Dcan run simultaneously on the same computer. You can use Spiralog in/an OpenVMS Cluster or on a standalone computer.Spiralog provides:4o A radical new approach to organizing data on diskDSpiralog treats a disk as if it were a sequential device, and writesFall information into a structure called a log. All data is written se-Fquentially to the tail of the log. This technique maximizes write per-4formance by reducing time-consuming disk head seeks.o Online backup and restoreDSpiralog provides fast online backup that runs without requiring anyFinterruption to applications or users. This reduces the amount of timerequired to manage your system.GYou can save either a whole volume or the parts that have changed sinceHa previous save. You can restore either a whole volume or selected filesand directories.o Enormous scalabilityC July 1996 DSpiralog keeps up with growing data requirements and makes data man-Dagement much simpler. It supports 10's of millions of files per vol-Cume by allowing huge directories. It also provides support for hugeCfiles, an order of magnitude larger than those supported by today's
file systems.Fo A high-performance write-behind software cache on each computer us- ing SpiralogFThe caches are automatically kept coherent throughout an OpenVMS Clus-Eter. Additionally, Spiralog provides cache ordering guarantees to en-1sure immediate recovery after a computer failure.Go A client-server architecture that provides automatic server failover in an OpenVMS ClusterEIf the computer serving a Spiralog volume fails, the service automat-Dically fails over to a standby server. This happens transparently toFusers; users on other computers continue accessing their data, unaware that the server has failed over.GSystem managers can control the location of servers and standby serversFaround the OpenVMS Cluster to maximize I/O throughput and balance disktraffic.+o Compatibility with existing applicationsFSpiralog supports existing OpenVMS programming interfaces for file ac-Hcess, such as Record Management Service (RMS) and run time library (RTL)Cfunctions. There is no need to recompile or relink existing OpenVMS
applications.Do A Spiralog utility that allows system managers to set up and man- age Spiralog volumes" 2 RESTRICTIONS:Spiralog is supported only under the following conditions:Fo Spiralog must be used with disks that can be considered error-free.F This requires that the underlying disks must be configured with one of the following:6 - Volume Shadowing for OpenVMS V7.0 (SPD 47.04.xx)- - RAID 5 (host based or controller based)6o Spiralog volumes must run at no more than 80% full.Go Serving Spiralog volumes via MSCP to other nodes in an OpenVMS Clus-$ ter environment is not supported.Co Access to Spiralog volumes from computers running either OpenVMSD VAX or versions of OpenVMS Alpha prior to Version 7.0 is provided7 only via network software such as DECnet and DECdfs.HARDWARE REQUIREMENTSEo Each computer on which you install Spiralog or mount Spiralog vol-/ umes must have at least 64 Mbytes of memory.Ao A Spiralog volume must have a capacity of at least 500 Mbytes.4o Files-11 (ODS-2) must be used as the system disk.Processors SupportedDSpiralog is supported on all OpenVMS Alpha systems, as documented inCthe OpenVMS Operating System for VAX and Alpha Version 7.0 SPD (SPD
25.01.xx)." 3 DISK SPACE REQUIREMENTSEo Free disk space required for installation: 9200 blocks on the sys- tem diskDThis size is approximate; the actual size may vary depending on your8system environment, configuration, and software options.SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS.o OpenVMS Alpha Operating System Version 7.0.INSTALLATIONDTo install Spiralog you use the POLYCENTER[TM] Software InstallationC(PCSI) utility. This utility is distributed with OpenVMS Alpha Ver-Fsion 7.0, and the right to use it is included with the license for theOpenVMS Alpha operating system.GROWTH CONSIDERATIONSEThe minimum hardware and software requirements for any future versionGof Spiralog may be different from the requirements for the current ver-sion.ORDERING INFORMATION,Spiralog Version 1.1 is available on CD-ROM:o As a separately ordered kit:4 - Software and online documentation: QA-4P7AA-H8( - Printed documentation: QA-4P7AA-GZ0o On the OpenVMS Alpha Software Product LibraryD The online documentation is available on the OpenVMS Alpha Online Documentation Library." 4 SOFTWARE LICENSINGEThe license rights for Spiralog are included with the license for theOpenVMS Alpha operating system.SOFTWARE PRODUCT SERVICESDSoftware Product Services for the Spiralog component are included inCthe OpenVMS Alpha operating system Software Product Services.
