Alpha AXP ECU Configuration files (.cfg files)
----------------------------------------------

The Eisa Configuration Utility (ECU) uses bus configuration files to
configure a computer's EISA bus. Not every Alpha AXP system has an
EISA bus, and if your system does not have an EISA bus then you do not
need to run the ECU.

The ECU configuration files that are held in this Library Section (on
CompuServe) or directory (on Gatekeeper.dec.com) are to be used in
conjunction with an existing Windows NT ECU floppy. If your Alpha AXP
system has an EISA bus and you do not have a Windows NT ECU floppy,
you will need to purchase one. To order one, call 1-800-DIGITAL
(1-800-344-4825) in the US and Canada.

To determine which version of the ECU files you need, follow these
steps:

1. In the following chart, locate the version of Windows NT that you
   want to install or boot.

2. The middle column lists what version(s) of the Windows NT ECU you
   must use.

If only one version is listed, then that is the only version you
   can use.

If more than one version is listed, the earliest ("minimum") kit
will work correctly on most Alpha systems. However, later kits
will have additional features or bugfixes, and these kits (listed
as "recommended") are the best kits available for your release of
   Windows NT.

If you already have the kit listed, or one of the kits listed, then
stop right now! You have the kit that you need to install Windows
   NT.

3. If you do not have the Windows NT ECU kit specified in the middle
column, then the rightmost column has a combination of a base kit
and update files that is the equivalent of the kit in the middle
column. In other words, either this combination of files, or the
ECU kit in the middle column, will enable you to boot Windows NT.

To make this alternative ECU, follow these steps:

	a. Obtain a blank floppy. Using the label command or the
File Manager, give this floppy a volume label of
	   "SYSTEMCFG".

We will refer to this floppy as the "new ECU floppy".

	b. Copy the Windows NT ECU base kit, specified in the
rightmost column, to the new ECU floppy.

	c. Download the specified update file from either the
CompuServe NT Support Forum (in Hardware Support [4]), or
Gatekeeper.dec.com (in /private/fwaxp). These sources of
files are identical, so you should download the specified
file from whichever of the two locations is most convenient
	   for you.

Once you have downloaded the file, unzip it onto the new
	   ECU floppy.

Some files will have the same name; this is normal. If
the unzip command that you use asks you whether to replace
an already existing file, answer "yes".

	d. The new ECU floppy may now be used to configure your
	   system.

4. If you do not have the ECU kit in the middle column, or the base kit
in the rightmost column, then you need to order an ECU kit before
you can install or boot Windows NT. In the US and Canada, please
call 1-800-DIGITAL (1-800-344-4825) to order an ECU kit.

V3.5 Minimum required: V1.5 The V1.6 kit is only available
as a part number from Digital.
	     Allowed: V1.55
The V1.55 kit can be made from a
	     Recommended: V1.6 V1.3, V1.4, or V1.5 base kit.

Notes: This is the overlay file to be
added to your base kit. Copy it
The V1.5 kit will correctly from the location that is most
	     configure most Alpha systems convenient:
	     for NT V3.5.
		   			       . From CompuServe:
	     The V1.55 kit allows additional
configuration options for "ECU cfg files, V1.55"
	     certain EISA cards.
	     				       . From Gatekeeper:
	     The V1.6 kit contains a
bugfix for systems with more "/private/fwaxp/ecucfg155.zip"
than 24 disks. The bug symptom
is that the ECU fails to
	     execute.

If a V1.5 kit appears to run
	     normally and you can
	     configure your system, you do
	     not need a later kit.
