<h1>Overview of GSM/EDGE Dual Band</h1>

<p>Dual Band GSM Network Operation provides the means to manage
the traffic between the GSM 900 and GSM 1800, between GSM 800 and GSM 1900
and between GSM 800 and GSM 1800 frequency bands, respectively.</p>

<p>If you have a licence in more than one of the frequency
bands, you can use Dual Band to support the use of multiband mobile stations
in all bands of the licence. By using this operation you can handle the growth
of traffic. This is useful especially when the frequencies of one single band
are limited.</p>

<p>With the Dual Band feature, the <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04439#id04439" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id04439#id04439');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">BSC</a>
is able to manage cells from different bands and to manage both GSM 900 and
GSM 1800, both GSM 800 and GSM 1900, or both GSM 800 and GSM 1800 BTSs in
one BSC. The BSC supports PGSM 900, EGSM 900, GSM 800, GSM 1900 and GSM 1800
frequency bands as a separate cell solution (one cell includes frequencies
from one band only).</p>

</div>

<p>The network is able to distinguish the mobiles (GSM 900/800
mobile, GSM 1800/1900 mobile, dual band mobile) by the mobile’s Classmark
3 (CM3). The contents of this message tell the network which bands the mobile
is capable of operating in and its output power capability in those bands.
The Classmark 3 information is stored in the <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id02939#id02939" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id02939#id02939');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">MSC</a>
(requires MSC support).</p>

<p>Dual band mobiles are informed of the neighbouring cells
in the other band via the system information messages 2ter in idle mode and
via 5ter during a call. Single band mobiles ignore these messages.</p>

<p>Dual Band is application software.</p>
