<h1>Planning Dual Band network</h1>

<p>The dual band network planning does not differ much from
the normal network planning procedure. The planning procedure starts from
choosing the right capacity evolution plan for long-term use, including the
use of Common BCCH (see <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=dn02222031&amp;edition=5&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=nov2921823201#nov2921823201" onclick="sync(this);return true" shape="rect">Common BCCH</a>)
and Dual Band. The capacity evolution plan and the dual band network implementation
greatly depend on the facts described below.</p>

<p>The current network situation:</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Number of subscribers / amount of traffic </p>
</li>
<li><p>Available bandwidth</p>
</li>
<li><p>Other capacity features used</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Micro cells</p>
</li>
<li><p>Separate indoor coverage</p>
</li>
<li><p>IUO / IFH</p>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><p>Space in the current site places</p>
</li>
<li><p>Single band MS penetration</p>
</li>
<li><p>Locations of the existing sites</p>
</li>
</ul>

<p>The coming dual band network: </p>

<ul>
<li><p>Single / multivendor</p>
</li>
<li><p>Available bandwidth for different bands</p>
</li>
<li><p>Expected traffic growth</p>
</li>
<li><p>Dual Band MS penetration</p>
</li>
<li><p>Importance of the new data services
(<a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08864#id08864" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08864#id08864');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">HSCSD</a>, <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08914#id08914" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id08914#id08914');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">GPRS</a>, <a href="NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id010415#id010415" onclick="openSmallPopup(event,'NED?action=retrieve&amp;identifier=general_glossary&amp;edition=13&amp;language=en&amp;coverage=global&amp;encoding=xhtml_1_0&amp;component=data&amp;item=data&amp;pointer=id010415#id010415');return false" shape="rect" target="_blank">EDGE</a>)</p>
</li>
<li><p>Cost of the network</p>
</li>
</ul>

<p>There are two basic capacity evolution approaches to implement
Dual Band:</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Complete coverage provided with the
GSM 1800/1900 band</p>
</li>
<li><p>Additional capacity provided with the
GSM 1800/1900 band where needed, like in traffic hot spots, micro cells, or
indoors.</p>
</li>
</ul>

<p>The difference is relevant in terms of costs. The second
solution is more cost-effective if no constraints are given in the licence.
GSM 1800/1900 implies a more cost-effective network in the regions of a high
traffic density, but a higher cost when providing a basic coverage. The GSM
900/800 network provides the wide area coverage, while GSM 1800/1900 is seen
as an efficient capacity extension, where it is required. If the original
GSM 900/800 network is highly interference limited, the new GSM 1800/1900
network might have a wider coverage as far as interference is concerned than
the GSM 900/800 network.</p>

<p>It is not sufficient to only consider the dual band network
growth. It is more important to compose a complete capacity evolution package,
including other capacity features, new data services, expected traffic growth,
and so on. </p>

<p>After choosing the right capacity evolution plan, including
the most suitable Dual Band scenario (hot spot coverage, continuous coverage,
micro cells, and so on), the correct traffic management strategy must be chosen.
This depends on the following facts:</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Single / dual band MS penetration</p>
</li>
<li><p>Network structure: GSM 900/1800 / GSM
800/1900 / GSM 800/1800 macro cells, GSM 900/1800 / GSM 800/1900 / GSM 800/1800
micro cells, IUO/IFH, indoor cells</p>
</li>
<li><p>Expected data traffic (HSCSD, GPRS,
EDGE)</p>
</li>
<li><p>Single / multivendor network (available
traffic management features).</p>
</li>
</ul>

<p>The traffic management strategy can also be chosen during
the parameterisation process.</p>

<p>When the normal planning procedure has been completed,
we proceed with capacity planning (number of TRXs and sites), frequency planning,
 parameter planning, and optimisation.</p>
